COMPUTER VIRUSES? WHAT REALLY IS IT?
1. A computer virus is the result of a destructive program that someone has written and
placed inside a computer program, which unsuspecting people then place in their computer
system. Some viruses can erase all the information from the place where it's stored on the
computer's hard disk. Some display strange messages on your computer screen; others make
small changes in your computer programs.
2. Why do people create viruses? Some people create these programs out of meanness to
get even. While others create them just as a challenge. Why do you think people create these
very destructive programs? How does your computer get a virus? Almost exactly the way
humans do.
3. Many people get contaminated computer programs by trading programs with other
people. Others get contaminated computer programs through the use of modems, which allow
computers to communicate over telephone lines (i.e. The Internet). Most of the time, programs
that arrive by modem or a trade are perfectly safe to use. However, you do stand a chance of
getting a program that has been tampered with. Here a computer program virus is hiding inside
the normal program. Many computer programs that are traded were copied illegally.
4. When this program enters your computer through your input device, it hides in your
computer's memory and starts to duplicate itself like a disease. When you save your data, you
also save the virus. Slowly but surely, the virus crowds out your data and causes major system
problems. The virus can't affect the computer's ROM, but it can affect RAM and your computer
disks. When your shut off your computer a virus that has been picked up will be lost, just like
any other memory that is held in RAM. If the virus is on your disk or hard drive, it will return to
the computer when you use the program again. If you switch from one program to another
without shutting down the machine, the virus will attach itself to the new program. In this way, it
can slowly infect all your programs before you know that it exists. Today millions of dollars are
being spent to rid and protect computer systems from these virus programs.

COMPUTERS AND HOW THEY WORK
1. Computers were never built to control us even though that is how it appears.
Computers today are small, fast, reliable, and extremely useful. Back in 1977 they operated in
basically the same way. They both received data, stored data, processed data, and then output
data similar the way our own brain functions.
2. Computer memory is the function of storage in a computer which comes in many
different sizes, types and shapes. However there are two basic categories: short-term and long-
term. A typical computer contains numerous types of memory including RAM, ROM, virtual,
cache, and various long-term storage devices. Each type of computer memory serves a specific
function and purpose. Computer memory is measured in bytes.
3. If someone had to find the brains of the computer they would most certainly say it’s
the microprocessor. The microprocessor is often referred to as the CPU (Central processing unit).
The microprocessor is a chip the size of a postage stamp. The processor is the one part of the
computer that is most important to the computer. The microprocessor controls how data is sorted
and directs the flow of data.
4. One of the best features of a computer is the ability to give the computer commands
and feed it information. Without an input device this would not be possible. Input devices can be
built into the computer, like the keyboard in a laptop, or it can be connected to the computer by a
cable. The most common input device is the keyboard. There are lots of others such as: mice,
trackballs, touch pads, touch screens, pens, joy sticks, scanners, bar code readers, video and
digital cameras, and microphones. In addition, storage devices such as disk drives can serve as
input devices. Input is important but equally important is the ability to read what the computer is
doing. The computer output devices are used to serve the user. The most common output device
is the monitor, or screen. Most computers, however, come with speakers and a printer which are
excellent output devices. Storage devices such as disk drives and diskettes also serve as output
devices when it is necessary to write new or updated data files to disk or tape.

Input is important but equally important is the ability to read what the computer is
224

Our current special drawings for silt fence require the fabric to be embedded but not anchored. I
believe that an anchorage device, such as Quick Guard, will be more effective way of ensuring
better erosion control.
I recommended that the silt fence special drawings be revised to require an anchor/gauge device
to be installed midway between posts to prevent blowouts.

NEW COMPUTER VIRUS DISGUISED AS SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

1. A new spam campaign using false e-mails made to look like messages from the Social
Security Administration is capable of stealing Social Security numbers and downloading
malware onto victims' home computers, says Gary Warner, director of computer forensics at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB Spam Data Mine).
2. "In this continued difficult economy, these cyber criminals are now preying on
victims' concerns over money, promising Social Security payouts and tax breaks to victims that
sign in to the criminals' fake Social Security Web pages," Warner says. The spam messages tell
users that there are errors with their Social Security statement then asks them to link to false
pages made to look like the Social Security Administration Web site. Warner says the false
pages ask users to enter their Social Security numbers before prompting them to download their
fake statement.
3. "The reality is that the download is actually a virus capable of stealing personal
information, including bank passwords, from home computers," Warner says. "So once you have
completed the login and download, the cyber criminals not only have your Social Security
number, they also have infected your computer with serious malware that enables them to steal
information and raid your bank and other accounts." Warner says the UAB Spam Data Mine
uncovered the new Social Security scam during its daily routine searchers for the top spam
campaigns, which are conducted every 15 minutes due to the high volume of spam arriving in
the data mine's inboxes each day.
4. "Just one half hour, we went from zero instances of the Social Security spam to
uncovering some 600 samples of the spam," Warner said. "So we have not only uncovered a
very new campaign, but a quick-spreading one as well." Warner reminds computer users that no
legitimate company or agency would ever ask users to update or review records via e-mail, but
instead would request they do so only through that company's own Web site. E-mails requesting
account updates should not be considered legitimate, Warner says.

HOW DID THE INTERNET BEGIN?
1. The Internet began 25 years ago as an experiment of the U.S. Defense Department. In
fact, it was not originally designed for the public's personal use. The original goal of the Internet
was to establish a system to safeguard the exchange of information among different government
agencies in the event of war. With no one computer or person controlling the Internet, the enemy
could not destroy our means of communication with just one military strike.
2. Today this unique feature of the Internet remains constant and part of its success. No
one person or organization controls or heads the Internet. In 1991 there were only 100 host com
puters or sites. Today this number exceeds half a million and is constantly growing.
3. What really caused the Internet's tremendous growth spurt was the invention of some
thing that made the Internet both easy to use and easy to transmit multimedia (graphics, sound,
and video). The invention was a software product now known as a browser. In 1991 in a Euro
pean physics lab, an invention was made that enabled words in a sentence to be clicked on and
an action then performed. This invention today is known as hypertext. Hypertext is when words
or pictures are clicked on that takes the place of typing commands into the computer. This single
feature made the Internet easier to use. With this invention came new users from small kids to
senior adults who felt comfortable riding the information super highway. This has forever
changed the way average people use the Internet.
4. Today we find people reading magazines, buying products, listening to radio stations,
talking to friends, writing messages, playing games, even watching video all through the use of
the Internet. With almost each passing day, a new product or tool is invented or improved upon
to help people use the Internet. However millions of people still are not using the Internet. This is
due mainly to the lack of either a computer or an Internet service provider. Nevertheless the In
ternet continues to surprise even the experts with its tremendous growth and popularity.

We critically need funds to launch this sorely needed computer training program, fund
the equipment, software, and the resources of two teachers to oversee and assist the volunteer
student educators. These equipment and support resources will constructively assist the 2,500
undereducated minority residents to be served by our new community Help Foundation. The
ethnic composition is approximately
49% Hispanic,
39% African-American,
9% Asian-
American, and 2% other. NIA has already raised an initial investment of more than $50,000 in
absolutely necessary computer equipment toward a computer systems, training and services
budget of more than $1 million. We have worked hard to bridge the gap and anticipate receiving
grants and donations totaling $300,000 from private sector sources, banks, foundations and
private donors. Despite our general fundraising efforts, our program budget is far from balanced.
Cuts in government financing continue, with more expected, especially those affecting our
clients with incomes below poverty level.

A programming language is a specially created language of textual or graphical kind.

PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE
1. A programming language is an artificial language designed to express computations
that can be performed by a machine, particularly a computer. Programming languages can be
used to create programs that control the behavior of a machine, to express algorithms precisely,
or as a mode of human communication.
2. The earliest programming languages predate the invention of the computer, and were
used to direct the behavior of machines such as Jacquard looms and player pianos. Thousands of
different programming languages have been created, mainly in the computer field, with many
more being created every year. Most programming languages describe computation in an imper
ative style, i.e., as a sequence of commands, although some languages, such as those that support
functional programming or logic programming, use alternative forms of description.
3. A computer programming language is a language also used to control external devices
such as printers, disk drives, robots, and so on. For example PostScript programs are frequently
created by another program to control a computer printer or display. More generally, a program
ming language may describe computation on some, possibly abstract, machine. It is generally ac
cepted that a complete specification for a programming language includes a description, possibly
idealized, of a machine or processor for that language. Programming languages differ from natu
ral languages in that natural languages are only used for interaction between people, while pro
gramming languages also allow humans to communicate instructions to machines.
4. A programming language's surface form is known as its syntax. Most programming
languages are purely textual; they use sequences of text including words, numbers, and punctua
tion, much like written natural languages. On the other hand, there are some programming lan
guages which are more graphical in nature, using visual relationships between symbols to speci
fy a program.

I am pleased to write to you about a project that I believe will be of interest to the Foundation.
The NIA is seeking $550,000 over three years to expand its very successful Tech Ed
(Technical Education) program to provide aggressive, hands-on computer training and
alternative education programs in our inner-city neighborhoods.
Tech Ed is a highly effective five-year-old academic enrichment program for inner-city junior
high and high school students. Formed through a partnership between NIA, the local college
and the city's school district, the program currently has a total enrollment of 500 students, and
is funded by the school district and matching HUD CD funds which are administered by the
city.
We critically need funds to launch this sorely needed computer training program, fund the
equipment, software, and the resources of two teachers to oversee and assist the volunteer
student educators. These equipment and support resources will constructively assist the 2,500
undereducated minority residents to be served by our new community Help Foundation. The
ethnic composition is approximately
49% Hispanic, 39% African-American, 9% Asian-
American, and 2% other.

GETTING THE MESSAGE
1. Although the first e-mail message was sent in 1971, electronic messages began nearly
two hundred years earlier. Telegraph machines used electricity to send messages along wires
from one place to another. The first telegraph machine was built in 1774. But for the next sixty
years, the machines were very large and difficult to use, and each one needed twenty-six wires -
one to reach letter of the alphabet. In the 1840s, an American inventor called Samuel Morse built
a better kind of telegraph which only needed one wire. He also invented a special code for
messages - Morse Code.
2. Immediately, telegraphs became an important way for people to communicate.
During the next twelve years, American telegraph companies put up 36,000 miles of
telegraph wires to send messages all over the USA. In the 1920s, a new kind of electronic
message was invented - the telex. A telex machine could send a message to any other telex
machine in the world. They did not use telephone or telegraph wires - they used telex lines.
These lines were q u i t e e x p e n s i v e , and the machines were not easy to use. It was not a perfect
system - but it worked.
3. Companies continued to use telex until the 1980s and many companies still have telex
machines today. In the 1980s, people began to buy personal computers. Soon, it was possible to
send e-mail messages from one PC to another, but both people had to be part of the same phone
e-mail system. There were several different email systems, and it was not possible to send
messages from one system to another.
4. For this reason, e-mails did not immediately become popular. In the 1990s, people
began to use the Internet and the Web. This made it easier to send e-mail messages because there
was only one system. Emails soon became a very popular (and very cheap) way to send
messages to anywhere in the world. In the late 1990s, people started lo send another kind of
electronic message: they used their mobile phones to send text messages. Now they could send
or receive messages in any place and at any time.

ЗАДАНИЕ №27 (выберите один вариант ответа)
Определите, является ли утверждение:
The Iranian government is planning to subsidize the railway budget to increase capacity within
the country
Прочитайте текст
279
NETWORK EXPANSION IS IN FULL SWING
1. The Iranian government’s decision to double the railway investment budget for 2008-
09 has provided a much-needed boost to the pace of development. Government policy is to
encourage more travel within the country, and passenger tariffs are heavily subsidized. This is
generating substantial demand for travel, which the railway is currently unable to meet. Demand
is estimated at 90 million journeys a year, but the present timetable only offers capacity for 25
million journeys - less than 30% of demand. To tackle this RAI and its passenger subsidiary
Raja Trains are striving to increase capacity by about 15% a year.
2. Network development is continuing apace, with the intension of connecting all major
cities to the network as soon as possible. The ultimate objective is to double the length of the
network, which currently stands as 8 300 route-km. The average distance between the main cities
is around 600 km, making rail ideal for the inter-city flows of both passenger and freight traffic.
3. But while the government is financing rapid development of the national railway,
much of the expansion seems to be happening independently from the operation of the network.
For example, the opening of new lines is increasing traffic on existing routes which have not
been upgraded to cope. In particular, there is a shortage of locos and rolling stock, as investment
in the fleet has not kept pace with the growth of the network.
4. RAI’s overall expenditure budget needs to be rebalanced to increase spending on the
existing lines, focusing on areas such as better management control and information systems,
business planning and recruitment; there is also a need for more recruitment and staff training in
areas such as management methods and operational safety. Unless addressed, there issues could
inhibit the overall pace of railway development.
