CV 3.270
Turbine “Backfire” Configuration
The Gas Turbine Electric includes the added sound effect of the turbine
‘backfire’. For those
who either saw these beasts in their heyday or have seen videos of past operations, these
backfires were spectacular, though relatively uncommon. It is an impressive effect, however,
and no turbine would be complete without it! CV 3.
270 (Turbine “Backfire” Configuration) is used
to adjust whether this effect occurs the first time the turbine is started, each time it’s started or to
disable the effect ensuring a successful start each time.
Backfire on the first start has been enabled by default (CV 3.270 = 1) allowing the unique sound
effect to play once, then the turbine will start and operate normally. If power is maintained to the
decoder, each subsequent startup sequence will not contain a backfire sound effect. If backfire
on every startup is selected (CV 3.270 = 2), the sound effect will play each time the turbine is
started.
To disable the backfire feature and ensure a successful start of the turbine each time, set CV
3.270 to 0.
CV 3.271 Turbine Start Speed Step
CV 3.271 is used to automatically trigger the startup sequence of the turbine based upon the
speed step set by your DCC throttle. When operating in fully automatic mode (factory default
configuration) increasing the throttle to speed step 8 will trigger the turbine startup sound effect.
Setting this CV to 0 will disable the feature giving you manual control of the turbine through the
use of the RPM+ or RPM- functions (default F5 and F6) or the turbine start/stop e (default F16).
The default value for this CV is 8.
CV 3.272 Turbine Speed Step Limit
The main purpose of the diesel engine on the prototype was to hostle the locomotive around the
yard and provide power to the appliances such as the air compressor and radiator fans. By
nature then, the diesel would be operating at very slow speeds when the turbine was turned off.
When CV 3.272 (Turbine Speed Step Limit) is set to a value greater than 0, the speed of the
motor in the model will be limited until the turbine has completed its startup sequence.
When operating in fully automatic mode (factory default configuration) and the turbine is shut
down, the speed of your model will be limited to speed step 8 (of 128). The default value for this
CV is 8.
CV 3.273 Turbine Timeout
This CV specifies the number of seconds before the turbine engine will turn off when the
locomotive is at speed step 0 (fully stopped) and the turbine start/stop effect (F16 by default) is
off. If manual mode operation is desired, set this CV to 0 to disable the feature for full control of
the turbine through the use of the RPM+ or RPM- functions (default F5 and F6) or the turbine
start/stop effect (default F16). The default value for this CV is 128, which corresponds to 128
seconds.
