DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION
The Mine Clearing Blade (MCB), when mounted to the front of the M1 or M1A1 Abrams Tank, is used to
clear 8-, 10- and 12-inch deep mines from a tank’s path. As the tank pushes the MCB through a minefield, loose
dirt and mines are rolled up onto moldboards and then pushed to the sides of tracks. A chain and dogbone
attached between the moldboards detonate any tilt rod mines in the center lane. A control box located in the
driver’s compartment provides operator control for raising and lowering the moldboards. A manual release system
allows moldboards to be lowered to the plowing position if the electrical system fails.

TM8K-106
DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION
Gun, Automatic, 25 mm, M242 is the main gun for the LAV-25 and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. An electric
motor, located on the bottom and to the rear of the auto gun receiver, drives all the moving parts inside the gun to
perform ammunition feeding, loading end firing, extraction, and ejection. The gun does not depend on barrel recoil
or expanding gases for operation. The auto gun receiver is attached to a rigid mount and does not recoil when the
gun is fired; only the barrel, breech, and bolt assemblies recoil. The firing pin is cocked just before firing to ensure
safe operation during the ram cycle. The bolt is seared (locked in the “open-bolt” position) when the trigger is
released. A receiver assembly mechanical interlock system stops the gun with the bolt locked in the breech posi-
tion if there is no recoil (round misfires or hangfires). The gun can be removed from a mount and another gun
installed in a short time. Two people can remove the automatic gun feeder, barrel assembly, and auto gun
receiver.

DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION
Tank, Combat, Full-Tracked, 120 mm Gun, M1A1 is a heavily armored land combat vehicle operated by a
four-man crew consisting of the commander, gunner, loader, and driver. It is powered by a 1,500 horsepower tur-
bine engine, an automatic transmission, and two final drives. The main armament on the vehicle is the 120 mm
M256 main gun mounted on a traversable turret. Additional fire power is provided by a coaxial-mounted 7.62 mm
M240 machine gun, a 7.62 mm M240 at the loaders station, and a .50-caliber M48 machine gun mounted at the
Commander’s Weapon Station. Weld fabricated rolled, homogeneous armor, combined with hull and turret armor
assemblies, provide frontal armor protection. The turret front and sides, including the gun shield, are protected
against specified large caliber threats. Large caliber protection for the hull front is provided by an armor assembly
across the entire hull width with high obliquity upper and lower glacis plates. Hull side protection consists of
armored skirts and structure. The rear hull structure and rear grille doors give protection from small arms fire.

DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION
The Thermal Weapon Sight (TWS) is a lightweight, low-power, high-performance, forward-looking infrared
(FLIR) device that augments crew-served night vision sights. TWS is completely passive and, although primarily
designed for target detection and engagement with individual and crew-served weapons, it can also be used for
all-weather surveillance. The U.S. Marine Corps is procuring both the Medium Weapon Thermal Sight (MWTS)
and the Heavy Weapon Thermal Sight (HWTS) in FY05. The MWTS will be mounted to the M249 Squad Auto-
matic Weapon (SAW) and M240G Medium Machine Gun. The HWTS will be mounted to the M2 .50 cal Heavy
Machine Gun and MK19 40 mm Machine Gun. The MWTS can effectively engage targets out to 1,000 meters,
while the HWTS can effectively engage targets out to 2,000 meters. The HWTS is virtually the same size as the
MWTS with the exception of the overall length and larger diameter lens.

eliminates blind spots, constricted vision, or the tunnel vision associated with tubed sights. The HDS is compatible
with all generations of night vision intensifier tubes and can be positioned in tandem with many image intensifica-
tion devices. The HDS is a SAC 1 SL-3 component that will be mounted on the M4A1 Close Quarter Battle
Weapon (CQBW).

The Rifle Combat Optics (RCO) is an optical aiming sight designed for use with the service rifle configured
with the MIL-STD-1913 Rail Adapter System. It attaches to the rail to provide the user a targeting tool to engage
distant daylight and near low-lit targets with increased identification certainty. The reticles of the two RCO scopes
appear identical. However, each reticle is specific to the ballistics of the weapon and is marked with identification
at the bottom center of the reticle display. The RCO is a slightly modified version of the ACOG. The RCO (A4) will
be mounted on the M16A2 or M16A4 Rifles. The RCO (M4) will be mounted on the M4A1 Carbine.
