Railway signalling system helps to avoid train collision.

RAILWAY SIGNALLING
1. Railway signalling is a system used to control railway traffic safely, essentially to prevent
trains from colliding. Being guided by fixed rails, trains are uniquely susceptible to collision;
furthermore, trains cannot stop quickly, and frequently operate at speeds that do not enable them
to stop within sighting distance of the driver. In the UK, the Regulation of Railways Act 1889
introduced a series of requirements on matters such as the implementation of interlocked block
signalling and other safety measures as a direct result of the Armagh rail disaster in that year.
2. Most forms of train control involve movement authority being passed from those responsible
(e.g., a signalman or stationmaster) for each section of a rail network to the train crew. The set of
rules and the physical equipment used to accomplish this determine what is known as the method
of working (UK), method of operation (US) or safeworking (Aus.). Not all these methods require
the use of physical signals and some systems are specific to single track railways.
3. The earliest rail cars were first hauled by horses or mules. A mounted flagman on a horse
preceded some early trains. Hand and arm signals were used to direct the “train drivers”. Foggy
and poor-visibility conditions led to the usage of flags and lanterns. Wayside signalling dates
back as far as 1832, and used elevated flags or balls that could be seen from afar.

RAILWAY SIGNALLING
1. Railway signalling is a system used to control railway traffic safely, essentially to prevent
trains from colliding. Being guided by fixed rails, trains are uniquely susceptible to collision;
furthermore, trains cannot stop quickly, and frequently operate at speeds that do not enable them
to stop within sighting distance of the driver.
Foggy
and poor-visibility conditions gave rise to flags and lanterns. Wayside signalling dates back as
far as 1832, and used elevated flags or balls that could be seen from afar.

(3)_____: Conflict of Interest Waiver for Michael Smith, (4) _____.
I am writing to request a waiver for Michael Smith, M.D., a member of the Antiviral Drugs
Advisory Committee, from the conflict of interest prohibitions of 18 U.S.C. section 208(a).
Waivers under section 208(b)(3) may be granted by the appointing official where "the need for
the individual's services outweighs the potential for a conflict of interest created by the financial
interest involved" and where the individual has made a disclosure of the financial interests at
issue. We have determined that you are the appointing official for purposes of section 208.
Therefore, you have the authority to grant Dr. Smith a waiver under section 208(b)(3).
Accordingly, I recommend that you grant Dr. Michael Smith a waiver that would allow him
to participate in all official matters concerning New Drug Application (NDA) 20-123, Varid
(movirapine), sponsored by ABC Laboratories, a subsidiary of Boehringer Ingelheim
Pharmaceuticals, for use in the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. I
believe that such a waiver is appropriate because in this case, the need for the services of Dr.
Smith outweighs the potential for a conflict of interest created by the financial interest attributed
to him.

Every crew is informed with train timetable.

TIMETABLE OPERATION
1. The simplest form of operation, at least in terms of equipment, is to run the system
according to a timetable. A fixed schedule is drawn up with which every train crew must be
familiar. Trains may only run on each section of track at their scheduled time, during which they
have 'possession' and no other train is permitted to use the same section.
2. When trains are running in opposite directions on a single-track railroad, meeting
points ("meets") are scheduled, at which each train must wait for the other at a passing place.
Neither train is permitted to move before the other has arrived. In the US the display of two
green flags (green lights at night) is an indication that another train is following the first and the
waiting train must wait for the next train to pass. In addition, the train carrying the flags gives
eight blasts on the whistle as it approaches. The waiting train must return eight blasts before the
flag carrying train may proceed.
3. The timetable system has several disadvantages. First, there is no positive
confirmation that the track ahead is clear, only that it is scheduled to be clear. The system does
not allow for engine failures and other such problems, but the timetable is set up so that there
should be sufficient time between trains for the crew of a failed or delayed train to walk far
enough to set up warning flags, flares, and detonators or torpedoes (UK and US terminology,
respectively) to alert any other train crew. A second problem is the system's inflexibility. Trains
cannot be added, delayed, or rescheduled without advance notice. A third problem is a corollary
of the second: the system is inefficient. To provide flexibility, the timetable must give trains a
broad allocation of time to allow for delays, so the line is in the possession of each train for
longer than is otherwise necessary. Nonetheless, this system permits operation on a vast scale,
with no requirements for any kind of communication that travels faster than a train. Timetable
operation was the normal mode of operation in North America in the early days of the railroad.

not allow for engine failures and other such problems, but the timetable is set up so that there
should be sufficient time between trains for the crew of a failed or delayed train to walk far
enough to set up warning flags, flares, and detonators or torpedoes (UK and US terminology,
respectively) to alert any other train crew.

Drug Evaluation and Research. This memorandum constitutes a determination, in accordance
with 18 U.S.C. Я208(b)(3), that the need for the Dr. Jones' services, with respect to matters of

Please note that this is a general matters waiver. It will not permit Dr. Jones to participate
in any matters involving specific parties that may affect his financial interests, or any person or

Train speed optimization allows using train mechanisms reasonably.

TRAIN SPEED OPTIMIZATION
1. Train speed optimization is a system that reduces the need for trains to brake and
accelerate, resulting in smoother and more efficient operation. While train speed optimization
needs some technical infrastructure, it is more of an operational concept than a technical
installation. One can relatively easily implement train speed optimization using for instance cab
signalling but the presence of a cab signalling system does not necessarily mean that it uses train
speed optimization. Train speed optimization may also be implemented using conventional
signalling.
2. Usually, trains are allowed to run at the maximum speed the track allows until the
distant signal of next occupied block. This is inefficient in many cases, because this way the train
comes to a halt in front of the red signal and has to accelerate again from zero. If the train slows
down much earlier, it reaches, given the right timing, the distant signal just when the home signal
switches to green. This way, the train does not need to stop. Thus, wear on the brakes is reduced
and the train uses less energy. But the main reason, especially for trains that accelerate slowly, is
that the train passes the home signal at high speed, compared to the conventional case where the
train often has to accelerate from standstill. This effectively increases track capacity, because the
time it takes for the train to run from the distant signal (that has just turned green) to the home
signal is often much less than the time it takes for a train to accelerate from the home signal.
3. For a train speed optimization system to work, it is necessary to have a signalling
system which is capable of displaying several different speeds, for instance 40, 60, 90 km/h and
the full line speed, which also requires an train protection system that is able to handle these
cases (cab signalling may replace these installations). Further, the track must be equipped with
inductive loops that detect the presence of trains with sufficient precision (or other means of
detecting the positions of the trains). Finally a computer system is needed that is able to
reasonably predict the movements of the trains for the next few minutes.

Ms. Wanda Jones, Principal
Anywhere Elementary School
Anywhere, VA 00000-0000
Dear Ms. Jones:
I am nearing completion of my Master's in Education Program at Shenandoah University, with an
46
anticipated graduation in December, 1999. I would like to apply to do my student teaching in
grade 5 at Anywhere Elementary School during the fall term.
As part of my graduate program, I have logged approximately 100 hours in various internship
programs; some of my experiences have included
interviewing school staff about various topics including teaching pedagogy and manage
ment
reviews of curricula for my grade level
tutoring students
teaching a variety of mini-lessons as well as some full class instruction
During discussions with different teachers during my internships, I have heard many nice things
about Anywhere Elementary School and believe that a student teaching assignment at your
school would provide me with some additional experiences that will help me become a more
effective teacher. I believe that my experiences and background would also be a good match with
the educational philosophy that is followed at Anywhere Elementary School.
Thank you for taking the time to review my request and I look forward to hearing from you.
Please need I know if you require additional information?
Sincerely,
John P. Student

The purpose of signalling is to ensure the safety of train movement.

AUTOMATIC SIGNALLING
1. Present-day signalling systems use colour light signals throughout. The aim of railway
signalling is to provide high standards of safety in train operation. For this purpose interlocking
plants are in general use at terminals, junctions, railroad crossings, etc.
2. Colour light signals are widely used for automatic signalling. Stations equipped with
modern signalling system have signals at each end, for entering and leaving, with signals located
approximately half-mile from the approach signals to warn the drivers that they are coming to a
station.
3. These signals give indications by electric lights, both by day and night. The colour
light signals are distinctly seen in the brightest sunlight.
4. Every signal used on railways has its own indication. The most common indications
shown by various signals are the following: Stop - requires a train to stop dead and not pass the
signal except under special instructions of emergency procedures. (Stop signals may be passed
after halting and waiting in automatic block territory - usually 1 min. during the day & 2 min.
during the night.); Caution - allows a train to proceed past the signal with caution (at reduced
speed), being prepared to stop at the next signal; Proceed - allows the train to proceed past the
signal without slowing down or stopping; Proceed Slow - shown only by calling-on signals,
allows a train to pass the signal at slow speed after stopping, being prepared to stop short of
another train or an obstruction on the same track; Proceed for Shunting - shown by shunting
signals, allows movement past the signal with caution for the purposes of shunting.

Dr. Maria Gomez-Salinas
Director of the Diabetes Clinic
St. David's Hospital
1000 Greenberg Lane
Wichita, KS 66780
Dear Dr. Gomez-Salinas:
I am writing you in hopes of finding out more about how the new Glucoscan II blood glucose
monitoring system, which a representative at Lifescan informed me that your clinic is currently
using.
Originally, I saw Lifescan's advertisement of this new device in the January 19XX issue of
Diabetes Forecast and became very interested in it. I wrote the company and got much useful
information, but was recommended to write several current users of the system as well.
For a technical report that I am writing for a technical writing class at Johnson County Junior
College, I need some help with the following questions: How often does the Glucoscan II need to
be calibrated in practical, everyday use conditions?
How accurate is the Glucoscan II compared to other similar systems that your patients have
used?
What problems do your patients experience with this new device?
The Lifescan representative indicated that your clinic is one the leaders in implementing new
technology for diabetics, and therefore I am eager to hear from you. In the report I will
acknowledge your contributions, and I will send you a copy of the completed report if you wish.
Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Anita Teller

(3)_____: Conflict of Interest Waiver for Michael Smith, (4) _____.
I am writing to request a waiver for Michael Smith, M.D., a member of the Antiviral
Drugs Advisory Committee, from the conflict of interest prohibitions of 18 U.S.C. section
208(a). Waivers under section 208(b)(3) may be granted by the appointing official where "the
need for the individual's services outweighs the potential for a conflict of interest created by the
financial interest involved" and where the individual has made a disclosure of the financial
interests at issue. We have determined that you are the appointing official for purposes of section
208. Therefore, you have the authority to grant Dr. Smith a waiver under section 208(b)(3).
Accordingly, I recommend that you grant Dr. Michael Smith a waiver that would allow
him to participate in all official matters concerning New Drug Application (NDA) 20-123, Varid
Smith outweighs the potential for a conflict of interest created by the financial interest attributed
to him.

1. A ceremony on a remote flood plain on the Yamal Peninsula on September 24 marked
completion of the longest bridge within the Arctic Circle. The 3.9 km structure over the Yuribey
River will carry a 572 km railway being built by Gazprom to carry construction materials and
workers to the Bovanenkovskoye gas field, one of the largest untapped gas reserves in the
country, and for shipping gas condensate out. The 525 km from Obskaya to Bovanenkovo is due
to open in January 2010, with the remaining section to Karskaya following in September.
2. There will be five stations, 12 passing loops and 70 bridges totalling 12 route-km. the
bridge over the flood plain features a novel crossing-arm design intended to maintain stability if
the permafrost thaws. The crossing arms comprise a series of 1.2 mm to 2.4 mm diameter metal
pipes buried in shafts drilled into the permafrost at a depth of 20 m to 40 m, and filled with
reinforced concrete.
3. Speaking at an energy summit in the Siberian city of Salekhard on the same day,
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin urged Gazprom to sell the railway to RZD to enable it to
concentrate on its core business of upstream gas production - an idea apparently supported by
Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller. The energy giant values the Yamal line at 170 bn roubles, but in
response to Putin’s suggestion, RZD President Vladimir Yakunin was quoted as saying, “for this
kind of money, let them keep it”.

(4) __________: NEED FOR NEW MEMO FORMAT
I've noticed we don't seem to be able to communicate important changes, requirements and
progress reports throughout the company as effectively as we should. I propose developing one
consistent memo format, recognizable by all staff as the official means of communicating
70
company directives.
While I know this seems like a simple solution, I believe it will cut down on needless e-mail,
improve universal communication and allow the staff to save necessary information for later
referral. Please talk among yourselves to determine the proper points of memo writing and return
the input to me by 12 noon. I will then send out a notice to the entire staff regarding the new
memo format.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this.

RAILROAD CONTROL SYSTEMS
1. Railroad Control Systems are used to direct or restrain the movement of trains, cars,
or locomotives on railroads, rapid-transit lines, and similar guided ground-transportation
networks. Such control varies from the use of simple solenoid valves (соленоидные клапаны)
to fully automatic electronic-electromechanical systems.
2. A primary function of railroad control systems is to ensure the safe movement of
trains. This is generally accomplished by providing train operators and track-side operators with
visual indications of equipment status. The simplest form of control consists of track-switch-
position indicators combined with track-side manually operated “stop” or “proceed” signals,
which the train operator follows. Advanced systems incorporate fully automated train control,
subject to human supervisory control and potential intervention when faults occur in automated
systems.
3. Block signals are used to provide definite space intervals trains and provides them
with broken-rail protection. Automatic block signaling is accomplished by sectionalizing the
track into electrical circuits to detect the presence of other trains, engines, or cars. Logic circuits
in the control system detect the locations of the trains and the positions of switches, and then set
the necessary signals to inform the train operators when to stop, run slowly, or proceed
(продолжить) at posted speeds. The control system automatically detects the presence of a
leading train, selects the signal to be given, and then sets the signal indications for the following
train operators to read so that they may perform accordingly. In conjunction with (вместе с)
automatic block signals, many subway rapid-transit lines incorporate automatic trip stops along
the tracks to ensure that train operators obey the stop signals.
4. Automatic cab signaling systems display signaling information
(traditionally,
permitted speeds) on the board of the train. Coded information is transmitted to the train;
generally via (через) the running rails which are connected on the one end with a battery, on the
other end the underground wires supplying the current for the track circuit. Antennas and
receivers aboard the train pick up, amplify, decode, and distribute the intelligence (сведение),
which then causes the proper signal aspects to be displayed in the cab. Automatic cab signaling
