Robbie’s first business!

One day, she told him her secret way of making jam. Robbie made too much for

the family to eat so he took it to other people in his street. He made more and more

jam. It tasted so good that his parents’ friends started buying it from him. Robbie

added all his costs together then decided on a price.

Robbie enjoyed art most at school. He liked maths and music too, but because it

was hard for Robbie to spell words correctly or to understand texts, he didn’t enjoy

being at school. In English, he had lots of problems.

Then he made a business plan on the computer with help from his dad. Now people

can buy his jam at a weekly market. It tastes wonderful and it’s healthy because

Robbie uses grape juice, not sugar, to make it.

“I’m still only 14 but I’m already a businessman!” Robbie laughs. “Last week I

earned 93 euro because 87 different people bought 58 kilos of my jam, and a

supermarket wants to sell it too. My career is in jam-making, I think!”

So, when Robbie was 12, his parents decided he should leave school and study at

home. There, he learnt about business and working on computers, and spent more

time happily studying art, exercising and practicing on his violin. Robbie’s

grandmother started teaching him to cook too. Like his mother and aunt he really

enjoyed doing it.

I had a great time on my adventure trip to Canada. I went with two teachers and all

my classmates. I missed my family at first but by the end of the holiday, I didn’t

want to go home!

On my favourite day, we went on a really long walk in the mountains. We had to

carry all our things in bags on our backs which was hard work but we never got

bored because we all chatted the whole time. We had a rock climbing lesson just

before our picnic lunch and later that afternoon we arrived at a lake where we

camped for the night. Three of my classmates tried to fish, without success! I

helped build the fire. The teachers and two of the older students made supper, then

we sat in our blankets around the fire and sang songs and made wishes in the dark.

We decided not to sleep inside the tents, but outdoors because we wanted to look at

the stars. Some of the boys made “bear” noises trying to make us afraid, but we

were still laughing at midnight because we were having so much fun. I’ll never

forget that day.

Look at the sentences below about a trip to East Africa.

The Trip of a Lifetime

Take a trip to East Africa. You begin this trip by visiting the wonderful wildlife parks. As well

as travel by coach, there is also an opportunity to take a short trip in a hot-air balloon over the

parks to get a better view of the wildlife.

After visiting the wildlife parks you have the choice of either spending the rest of your holiday

(7 nights) climbing Mount Kilimanjaro - the highest mountain in Africa - or, for the not so

adventurous, sunbathing on the beautiful white sand beside the Indian Ocean.

possible to stay an extra week at the coast.)

Day One: Fly from London Heathrow to Nairobi, Kenya.

Day Two: Drive to the National Park at Lake Manyara. This park is famous for

the large variety of birds, which you can see there early in the

morning.

Day Three: Leave Manyara for the Serengeti Park, where you may see

elephants, lions and giraffes.

Day Four to Nine:

Spend these days travelling by coach around the park. All visitors

have a window seat on the coach with a clear view for photographs

of the park and animals. Although the animals are not worried by

tourists taking photos, we ask visitors to speak quietly so as not to

disturb them too much.

Accommodations in tents is normal in the parks. All have private

washing facilities. The tents have plenty of space, are very

comfortable and have a solid floor. The guides are highly experienced,

but there is always the possibility that you may be very unlucky and

not see certain animals.

Day Ten: Departure for the mountain trek or to the Indian Ocean.

The Indian Ocean Hotel is on the beach and all rooms have air-

conditioning and sea views. All water sports are available and there

are tennis courts, which you can use free of charge except during high

season, when there is small booking fee.

No special skills are needed to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, but if you

choose this trip you must already be fit and healthy and ready to

accept some very basic accommodation in mountain huts.

Most tours and safaris can only operate with a minimum number of passengers. If this number

is not reached, we might cancel the tour. If this happens, we will make a decision at least 8

weeks before departure and will try to arrange a different holiday. Minimum numbers can be

from 2 to 15 according to the tour.

For practical reasons, children under the age of 8 (under 12 on climbing holidays) may not be

accepted on certain tours.

APE ART

Works of art by apes have been displayed in art galleries around the world since the 1950’s.

It’s not a joke. Apes are natural artists and ape art is becoming big business.

Ape art did not use to have any form. In fact, paintings by chimps were nothing more than

paint thrown onto a canvas, and it was impossible to tell what the pictures were meant to show.

Koko and Michael live in California and they have been painters since they were very

I’m a big fan of films featuring the spy James Bond. I`ve got most of them on DVD. We’ve

recently bought Quantum of Solace, in which Daniel Craig plays the part of Bond. I don`t

know why the film’s got that name - but it’s a great movie, anyway.

All the actors who’ve played James Bond have been great, but Daniel Craig, who’s made lots

of other films, plays the part better than any of them. Even though he doesn’t talk very much, I

think he’s the most perfect actor for the role. He even does a few of the more dangerous things

in the film himself, instead of getting someone else to do them. I did wonder sometimes

whether he’d be clever enough to defeat the bad people - but I’m not going to tell you the

ending. The actress who stars with Craig gives a fantastic performance too - I loved all the

glamorous clothes she wore!

The director probably had a hard job making this Bond film as full of action as earlier ones.

But the excitement starts right at the beginning here, with a car chase along a mountain road,

and plenty of other thrilling scenes, too

- Bond leaping off tall buildings and so on.

Unfortunately I found the story difficult to follow in places, and it also seemed to be over very

quickly - it lasted under two hours. I also felt there weren’t as many jokes as in the old Bond

films. And where was all the ridiculous Bond equipment - the underwater car or exploding

watch that everyone laughed at? This is more serious, darker Bond film, but I still really

enjoyed it.

My home is a windmill

My home’s different from where my friends live because I live in a19th century windmill! My parents

saw it one day, and bought it. It was in poor condition, but it was repaired and now it’s fantastic!

The windmill was once used to make flour from corn. The corn store used to be downstairs, where

our kitchen is now, and horses came there to deliver the corn. The enormous 20-metre sails are still

on the front, but they don’t turn in the wind like they used to because it’s too dangerous, so birds live

in them instead. There’s always a ladder up the side of the windmill so that dad can paint it and keep

it a nice cream colour. He also cleans the windows, although a company comes to do the top ones as

the ladder’s too short.

Inside it’s like a tent with six sides, and it becomes more pointed towards the top, so the rooms get

smaller. My room’s under the roof and I get a fantastic view - it’s like looking out of an airplane

window. There are some other houses around now, and a new main road, but I can relax and make a

noise when I play my guitar up there and no one can hear me! I can hear everything, though, like the

birds when it’s quiet, which is really calming, or the very loud storms, which I can see coming towards

us. And I actually find it easier to concentrate on my school work up there, as my brothers and sisters

don’t want to climb up all the stairs, so they don’t disturb me! I can’t imagine living anywhere else!

It’s great that they’ve kept the corn store as it was. The horses used to love coming

there.

The sails are a lot smaller than they used to be. I suppose that’s for safety reasons.

It’s still in the same condition as before. The owners never looked after it then, either.

You can still see the windmill from miles away. Of course, there weren’t all these

buildings around it then, as a busy road going past.

On 2 November 1982, the British public turned on their television sets for the arrival of the nation’s

fourth TV station, called Channel 4. They were greeted by the smiling face of local TV news presenter

Richard Whiteley, who welcomed them with the words: ‘As the countdown to a new channel ends, a

brand new countdown begins.’ And with this sentence, the words and numbers game show

‘Countdown’ was launched.

The rules of this new game show were as follows: two contestants faced each other over several

rounds of games with letters and with numbers. Finally, there was the Conundrum round, where

contestants had to work out the nine-letter anagram. At the end of the show, the contestant with the

highest score won and was invited back the next day to face a new challenger.

However, despite the simplicity of the rules, those who watched the early editions of the 30-minute

show, which was on five days a week, could hardly have imagined that it would last any longer than

the original seven weeks that had been planned for it. The first contestants and guests were not

exactly the most exciting people on television.

But luckily for ‘Countdown’, there were enough old people, university students and other people with

nothing much to do each afternoon to keep the show alive. When the show began, Carol Vorderman

won over fans with her amazing mathematical abilities. ’Countdown’ made a celebrity out of Carol,

and these days she’s a familiar face on British TV. Despite her fame, Carol still loyally turned up on

‘Countdown’ each day to turn over the letters and show the contestants how to solve the numbers

game until she retired in 2008.

Yes, that is correct - nearly 30 years since it began, ‘Countdown’ continues to keep its audience’s

brains working every afternoon. In fact, on 3 January 2006, it celebrated its 4,000^th show. Other signs

of its success include the increase in the length of each programme to 45 minutes, the addition of a

show on Saturdays and the number of British celebrities who have made an appearance.

The History of BMX Biking

A. BMX biking began in the late 1960s in southern California. It’s based on the sport of motocross,

which dates back to 1924 and involves racing motorbikes across rough tracks. It started when children

began to copy motocross riders by racing their bikes on tracks which they built themselves. This new

form of bike racing was named bicycle motocross, or BMX.

B. In July 1971, a movie about motocross called ‘On Any Sunday’ came out. At the start of the film a

group of kids from California are shown riding their bicycles as if they were riding motorbikes. This

helped to make BMX biking more popular. Soon BMX races attracted hundreds of riders.

C. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the most famous BMX bike was the Schwinn Sting-Ray; this was

the bike every young rider wanted to own. At this time 70 per cent of all bicycle sales in the USA were

either the Sting-Ray or similar models. By the mid 1970s BMX design had improved a lot and there

were many new models to choose from. But the bikes all had the same sized wheels and usually only

one brake.

D. In 1977, the American Bicycle Association was formed to organize the competitions and to make

the rules. The sport was also becoming popular in other parts of the world, particularly in Europe. The

first BMX world championship was held in Indianapolis, USA, in 1978. Most of the 165 competitors

were teenagers, but there were also children competing in special races for the under 8s and under

12s. There were separate races for boys and girls. There weren’t many nationalities present at this

competition; apart from Americans there were only a few riders from Australia, Japan and Venezuela.

E. Since that time the number of races for adults has grown very quickly, but BMX racing didn’t

become a full Olympic sport until the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Maris Stromberg from Latvia

won the first ever Olympic men’s gold medal for BMX racing and Anne-Caroline Chausson from France

became the first women’s champion.

F. As the popularity of BMX grew, riders were constantly testing the limits of their bikes. BMX wasn’t

just about racing any more. Riders began to take their bikes to skateboard parks and started

performing tricks and jumps. This became known as ‘freestyle’ and riders soon began to practice this

as much as racing.

Max: Not that many, if possible. It’s only a small flat, and I only really want my close

Max: Even so, some of them won’t know each other. My friends from round here aren’t

the same kind of people as the ones from school. They like different things, really.

Max: It’s got to be a weekend, so not the Thursday. Saturday would be best, I think.

Holly: I agree the weekend’s best, but the problem is that lots of people will be away on

the Saturday. Perhaps you should have it on the Friday?

Max: I don’t know.

Holly: I don’t think Alicia can come on the Saturday.

Max: All right, then. I’ll have it the day before.

Holly: I thought you might.

Task 2

Teacher: Listen everybody. I’m going to give you some important information about our

trip to the capital on Friday.

Firstly, the coach is coming to pick us up from school and we leave at nine-fifteen. But

don’t wait outside the main gate, even if you see the coach waiting there. Come to the

classroom first because I need to take the register before we leave, to make sure

everyone’s her. OK?

Lunch is provided, so don’t bring your own food. You’ll each get a sandwich, either meat,

egg or cheese - you can choose - plus some chocolate and a piece of fruit. But you do

need to bring a drink. So don’t forget to tell your parents that.

When we get to the capital, the coach drops us at the sports stadium where there’s a big

coach park. From there we’ll walk to the Transport Museum, which is our first visit. After

that, it’s on to the Natural History Museum.

In the afternoon, we’re going to the national Concert Hall, but not to see a concert or

dancing because the event that’s on is actually not a musical show at all, it’s a fashion

show. When it’s finished, a famous clothes designer will tell us about her work.

At the concert hall, there’s a large souvenir shop where you can buy presents for your

families. Be careful though - the books and games are expensive, but the postcards are

very good value. You’ll have about fifteen minutes to look around.

Now, remember the coach will go at five-thirty. So we have to leave the shop at five

o’clock at the latest, to walk back to the coach park together. Tell your parents we’ll be

back at school here by seven-fifteen, OK?

Translating the world’s bestseller

A There are more than 400 million Harry Potter books in the world. But approximately 100 million

copies do not contain any lines from the author’s original text. That’s because they are translations. At the

moment, there are versions in over sixty languages, including Welsh, Latin and Ancient Greek.

B Jean-Francois Menard, the French translator of the Harry Potter books, translated the 700-page

fourth book in just 63 days. The translators didn’t have much time because they could only begin when the

English version appeared in the shops. This was because the author wanted the story to be a total secret.

In a few countries where the general public’s level of English is very high (for example in Scandinavia), it

was very important to translate the books quickly. If not, people in those countries could just buy the

original English version, not the translation.

C In other countries such as China, there were unofficial, pirate translations. People sold them on the

streets illegally. The author didn’t receive any money from these books and often the translations were not

very good. A pirate version in Venezuela in 2003 contained many mistakes. The translator occasionally

put a few of his own informal messages into the text, for example “Here comes something I can’t translate,

sorry”, or “I didn’t understand what that meant”.

D It’s true that the translation of J.K.Rowling’s books had some special difficulties. One big problem

was with invented words and names. There are a lot of these words in the series - approximately 400!

Spanish readers find most of these words exactly the same as in English. So, quidditch ( the invented sport

that Harry Potter plays) and muggles (humans who haven’t got magical powers) are unchanged in the

Spanish versions. But in Brazil the translator invented her own Portuguese words to express the ideas and

sounds of the original words. So we have quadribol to translate quidditch, and trouxas instead of muggles.

Luke Hayes-Alexander Teenage Master Chef

14 Luke looks like a typical eighteen-year-old. He is tall (1.95 meters), skinny and pale and is into

strange hats and loud music. Luke speaks softly and is quite shy but when he talks about food, you

can hear his passion for cooking: “My life is about food - shopping, preparing, developing and

serving”.

15 Luke Hayes-Alexander is executive chef of Luke’s in Kingston, Canada, started by his parents in

1993 and named after their eighteen-month-old son. Luke’s now attracts food lovers from all over

the world because of the exciting new dishes created by its brilliant young chef.

16 Luke didn’t have a typical childhood. When he was a kid, he didn’t play video games or watch TV

and he hated sport. He read War and Peace when he was seven (and understood it!) and he

preferred cookbooks to comic books. After finding out that he had diabetes, he had to know about

all of the ingredients in the food he ate. Soon, he started helping his father in the kitchen and

thinking about new recipes.

17 At the age of fourteen, Luke left school and, with his parents’ help, combined home schooling

with learning more about food and cooking. Then, when Luke was only sixteen, he took the

position of chef from his father and started changing the small family restaurant into a center of

creative cuisine.

18 Luke loves looking for new and unusual combinations of flavours and textures for his dishes.

Luke cares a lot about his ingredients; they all come from local farms and everything in the

restaurant is home-made. “I enjoy cooking almost everything,” he says, “if it is beautiful and fresh.”

Surprisingly, although he is a vegetarian, Luke is an expert at preparing and cooking meat and his

smoked sausages are delicious.

19 Luke is happy in Kingston but has many plans and is already working on a cookery book with

dozens of his interesting recipes. “I’d love to write books to teach people, to inspire them,” he says.

He would also like to go to Europe to find out more about European cooking and talk to his heroes

like the Spanish cook Ferran Adria.

Exams are a fair way of testing students

Every year thousands of students take important exams which can decide their future.

Students have to pass exams with satisfactory grades in order to get a place in a university.

On the one hand, exams seem fair. The questions are the same for all students. Also, the

exams are marked according to a strict scheme and usually by more than one examiner.

TASK 1

For questions 1-10 you will hear a girl, Eva, and a boy, Carl, talking about computers.

Decide if each sentence is correct or incorrect. You will hear the conversation twice.

Eva: Carl, how long do you spend on your computer each evening?

Carl: Well, my college work usually takes at least two hours.

Eva: Is that all? I think maybe I spend too long looking for information - I start off by

researching one topic on a website and then I follow a link to something else. Suddenly I realize

how late it is and I’m on a completely different subject and I still haven’t finished the work I was

supposed to do.

Carl: You can waste a lot of time surfing the internet and following links to other websites.

Eva: The trouble is I find it so fascinating.

Carl: But you do know that you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, don’t you,

Eva?

Eva: Oh, yes, that’s why I never go in chat rooms - you have no idea who you’re talking to and

what they might find out about you.

Carl: Chat rooms are OK so long as you’re sensible and don’t give out any personal information.

I go in some music chat rooms from time to time, not very often. I talk to friends there. I

download quite a lot of music from the internet too, usually while I’m doing my homework. And

I’ve got several friends in different countries who I keep in touch with by email.

Eva: Me too, and that takes us a lot of time.

Carl: What I really like are computer games, especially the ones you can play against other

people online. Sometimes I stay up really late playing.

Eva: I find them boring and it’s not good for you to sit in front of a screen for too long. That’s

what I’m worried about.

Carl: You’re right. I tell you what - I’ll try to limit my time playing online games. If you stop

surfing websites that aren’t going to be useful for your work.

Eva: OK, that’s a good idea, and then let’s go to the cinema one evening with the time that

we’ve saved.

Carl: Great!

TASK 2

You will hear a teacher talking about some visitors coming to speak at the school. For each

question, fill in the missing information in the numbered space. You will hear the text twice.

Teacher: I want to tell you about some talks that I’m arranging. The plan is to have a different

speaker each month, on the first Tuesday. I know a lot of you do other clubs on Mondays and

Thursdays.

They’ll tell us about their jobs - what they do and how they built their careers. These talks will

take place outside school hours, so they’ll start at a quarter to five.

I’ve arranged two talks so far. The first will be by a woman called Ellie Brown and she’ll be

speaking on the 2^nd of November. Ellie’s done lots of interesting jobs - including being a

teacher! But now she works as a travel writer and her pieces appear in lots of magazines. She is

going to tell us about her schooling and she offered to talk about Brazil or Thailand, but we

agreed that she’d talk about her most recent trip, which was to Australia - as I know you’re

studying that country in your history class at the moment. She’s got lots of great video clips and

photos to show you.

The second talk, by Harry Fowler, is not actually going to be on Tuesday 7^thDecember - Harry

couldn’t make it - but on the next day, the 8^th. Harry works as a camera operator and has lots of

experience making films and documentaries. He’s going to tell us about filming wildlife shows.

He’s got lots of great stories to share. And, if any of you are keen to know more about his work,

you can buy his book, Behind the Lens, after his talk. You’ll be able to get it for the discount

price of nine pounds ninety-nine, which is great because it’s fifteen pounds in the bookshops and

he’ll even sign it for you…
