Engine output restriction when the accelerator pedal and brake pedal
are depressed at the same time

Purpose of the brake override system

If the accelerator pedal and brake pedal are depressed at the same time, the brake
override system may operate and restrain the engine output. A warning message is
displayed on the multi-information display while the system is operating.

WARNING

To avoid depressing the wrong pedal, become familiar with the location of the brake
pedal and accelerator pedal before driving the vehicle.
If the accelerator pedal is mistaken for the brake pedal and depressed, the vehicle may
suddenly start off.

NOTICE

Do not depress the accelerator pedal and brake pedal at the same time while driving, as
this may cause the engine output to be restrained.

When the following unusual operation is performed with the accelerator pedal
depressed, the engine output may be restrained.

When the TRC is turned off, sudden start restraint control also does not operate.

If your

vehicle have trouble escaping from the mud or fresh snow due to sudden start restraint
control operation, deactivate TRC so that the vehicle may become able to escape from
the mud or fresh snow.
Also, sudden start restraint control will not operate in the following conditions:

Seat belt pretensioners

When the vehicle is subjected to a severe frontal or side impact, the pretensioners
retract the seat belts of the front seats and rear outer seats to securely restrain the
occupants.

The pretensioners will not operate in minor frontal or side impacts, rear impacts, or vehicle
rollovers.

INFORMATION

■

Replacing the belt after the pretensioner has been activated

If the vehicle is involved in multiple collisions, the pretensioner will activate for the first
collision, but will not activate for the second or subsequent collisions.

■

PCS-linked control

If the PCS (Pre-Collision System) determines that the possibility of a collision with a
vehicle is high, the seat belt pretensioners will be prepared to operate.

WARNING

■

Seat belt pretensioners

If a pretensioner has operated, the SRS warning light will illuminate.
In this situation, the seat belt cannot be used and must be replaced by any authorized
Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.

SRS airbags

The SRS airbags deploy when the vehicle is subjected to certain types of severe
impact that may cause significant injury to the occupants. The airbags work togeth-
er with the seat belts to help reduce the risk of death or serious injury.

The main SRS airbag system components are shown above. The SRS airbag
system is controlled by the airbag sensor assembly. As the airbags deploy, a
chemical reaction in the inflators quickly fills the airbags with non-toxic gas to help
restrain the motion of the occupants.

INFORMATION

If the SRS airbags deploy (inflate)

●

Slight abrasions, burns, bruising, etc., may be sustained from SRS airbags, due to the
extremely high speed of deployment (inflation) by hot gases.

●

A loud noise and white powder will be emitted.

Parts of the airbag module (steering wheel hub, airbag cover and inflator) as well as
the parts around the airbags may be hot for several minutes. The airbag itself may also
be hot.

●

The windshield may crack.

●

All of the doors will be unlocked.

●

The brakes and stop lights will be controlled automatically.

●

The interior lights will turn on automatically.

●

The emergency flashers will turn on automatically.

●

Fuel supply to the engine will be stopped.

●

Vehicles with ERA-GLONASS/EVAK: If any of the following situations occur, the sys-
tem is designed to send an emergency call

* to the ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control

center, notifying them of the vehicle’s location (without needing to push the [SOS]
button) and an agent will attempt to speak with the occupants to ascertain the level
of emergency and assistance required. If the occupants are unable to communicate,
the agent automatically treats the call as an emergency and helps to dispatch the
necessary emergency services.

•

When an SRS airbag has been deployed

•

When a seat belt pretensioner has operated

•

When the vehicle has been involved in a severe rear-end collision

•

When the vehicle has been involved in a rollover

The SRS airbags deploy in a frontal impact when

●

The following SRS airbags will deploy in the event of an impact that exceeds a
threshold level (level of force corresponding to an approximately 20 - 30 km/h [12 -
18 mph] frontal collision with a fixed wall that does not move or deform):

SRS front airbags

•

SRS knee airbags

●

The threshold level at which the SRS airbags will deploy will be higher than normal in
the in the following situations:

•

When the vehicle collides with an object, such as a parked vehicle or sign pole,
which moves or deforms on impact
If the vehicle is involved in an underride collision, such as a collision in which the
front of the vehicle “underrides”, or goes under, the bed of a truck

Depending on the type of collision, only the following may deploy:

The SRS airbags for the front passenger's seat will not deploy if there is no passenger
in the front passenger seat. However, the SRS airbags for the front passenger's seat
may deploy, even if the seat is unoccupied, if luggage is put on the seat.

●

In the event of an especially severe frontal collision, the left and right SRS curtain shield
airbags may also deploy.

The SRS airbags deploy in a side impact when

●

The following SRS airbags will deploy in the event of an impact that exceeds the
set threshold level (level of force corresponding to the impact force produced by an
approximately 1500 kg [3300 lb.] vehicle colliding with the passenger compartment
at a perpendicular angle at an approximate speed of 20 - 30 km/h [12 - 18 mph]):

In the event of a side collision, regardless of the impacted side, both the left and right
SRS curtain shield airbags will deploy.

formed, or was involved in a collision that was not
severe enough to cause any of the following SRS

When a door or its surrounding area is damaged,
deformed or has had a hole made in it, or was in-
volved in a collision that was not severe enough to
cause any of the following SRS airbags to deploy:

●

When the pad section of the steering wheel, the dashboard near the front passenger
SRS airbag or the lower side of the instrument panel is scratched, cracked, or other-
wise damaged.

●

When the surface of a seat with an SRS side airbag or SRS front center airbag is
scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged.

●

When the part of a front pillar, rear pillar or roof side rail garnish (padding) which
covers a SRS curtain shield airbag is scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged.

WARNING

■

SRS airbag precautions

Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.

●

The driver and all passengers must wear their seat belts correctly.
The SRS airbags are supplemental devices to be used with the seat belts.

●

The SRS driver airbag deploys with considerable force, and can cause death or
serious injury, especially if the driver is very close to the airbag.
Since the risk zone for the driver’s airbag is the first 50-75 mm (2-3 in.) of inflation,
placing yourself 250 mm (10 in.) from your driver airbag provides you with a clear
margin of safety. This distance is measured from the center of the steering wheel to
your breastbone. If your current driving position places you less than 250 mm (10 in.)
away from the driver airbag, you can change your driving position in several ways:

•

Move your seat to the rear as far as possible while still being able to reach the
pedals comfortably.

•

Slightly recline the seatback. Although vehicle designs vary, many drivers can
achieve the 250 mm (11 in.) distance, even with the driver seat all the way forward,
simply by reclining the seatback somewhat. If reclining the seatback makes it hard
to see the road, raise yourself by using a firm, non-slippery cushion, or raise the seat
if your vehicle has that feature.

•

If your steering wheel is adjustable, tilt it downward. This points the airbag toward
your chest instead of your head and neck. The seat should be adjusted as recom-

mended above, while still being able to control the vehicle with the pedals and
steering wheel, and maintaining your view of the instrument panel controls.

●

The SRS front passenger airbag deploys with considerable force, and can cause death
or serious injury, especially if the front passenger is very close to the airbag. The front
passenger seat should be positioned as far possible from the airbag with the seatback
adjusted so that the passenger is sat upright.

●

Improperly seated and/or restrained infants and children can be killed or seriously
injured by a deploying airbag. An infant or child who is too small to use a seat belt
should be properly secured using a child restraint system. Lexus strongly recommends
that all infants and children be placed in the rear seats of the vehicle and properly
restrained. The rear seats are safer for infants and children than the front passenger
seat.

●

Do not sit on the edge of the seat or lean against
the dashboard.

●

Do not allow a child to stand in front of the SRS
front passenger airbag or sit on the lap of a front
passenger.

●

Front seat occupants should never hold items on
their lap.

●

Do not lean against the door, roof side rail, or front,
side, or rear pillar.

WARNING

●

Do not allow anyone to kneel on a seat toward
the door or put their head or hands outside the
vehicle.

●

Do not attach anything to or lean anything against
areas such as the dashboard, steering wheel pad
and lower portion of the instrument panel.

●

Do not attach anything to areas such as the doors,
windshield, side windows, front or rear pillars, roof
side rails and assist grips.

●

Do not hang coat hangers or other hard objects on the coat hooks. These items could
become projectiles if the SRS curtain shield airbags deploy, possibly leading to death
or serious injury.

●

If a vinyl cover is attached to the area where the SRS knee airbag deploys, be sure to
remove it.

●

Do not use seat accessories which cover the parts from which the SRS airbags deploy,
as they may interfere with inflation of the SRS airbags. Such accessories may prevent
the SRS airbags from deploying correctly, may disable the system or cause the SRS
airbags to inflate unintentionally, possibly resulting in death or serious injury.

●

Do not strike or apply significant force to the SRS airbag system components, front
doors or their surrounding area. Doing so may cause the SRS airbags to malfunction.

●

Do not touch any components of the SRS airbags immediately after the SRS airbags
have deployed (inflated) as they may be hot.

●

If breathing becomes difficult after the SRS airbags have deployed, open a door or
window to allow fresh air in, or leave the vehicle if it is safe to do so. Wash off any
residue as soon as possible to prevent skin irritation.

●

If a part where an SRS airbag is stored is damaged or cracked, have it replaced by any
authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

Modification and disposal of SRS airbag system components

Do not dispose of your vehicle or perform any of the following modifications without
consulting any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
The SRS airbags may malfunction or deploy unintentionally, possibly leading to death or
serious injury.

Removal, installation, disassembly or repair of the SRS airbags

●

Repair, removal or modification of the following parts or their surrounding

Emergency assistance

ERA-GLONASS/EVAK

The Emergency Call system is a device installed on a vehicle to determine its
location and movement direction (using GLONASS [Global Navigation Satellite
System] and GPS [Global Positioning System] signals), and ensure the generation
and transmission of vehicle information (in a nonadjustable form) in case of traffic
accidents or other incidents on motor roads in the countries offering emergency
notification services. In addition, it ensures two-way voice communication between
the vehicle and an ERA-GLONASS/EVAK system operator through cellular net-
works (GSM).Automatic Emergency Calls (via Automatic Collision Notification)
and manual Emergency Calls (by pressing the [SOS] button) can be made to the
ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center.This service is mandatory according to the
technical regulations of the Customs Union.

If any airbag deploys, the system is designed to automatically call the ERA-GLO-
NASS/EVAK control center.

The answering operator receives the vehicle’s

location, the time of the incident and the vehicle VIN, and attempts to speak
with the vehicle occupants to assess the situation. If the occupants are unable
to communicate, the operator automatically treats the call as an emergency and

In the event of an emergency, press the [SOS] button to call the ERA-GLO-

If you accidentally press the [SOS] button, tell the operator that you are not experiencing
an emergency.

Indicator lights

When the engine switch is turned to ON, the red indicator light will illuminate for
10 seconds and then the green indicator light will illuminate, indicating that the
system is enabled. The indicator lights indicate the following:

If the green indicator light illuminates and stays on, the system is enabled.

●

If the green indicator light flashes twice per second, an automatic or manual
Emergency Call is being made.

●

If no indicator lights illuminate, the system is not enabled.

●

If the red indicator light illuminates at any time other than immediately after
the engine switch is turned to ON, the system may be malfunctioning or the
backup battery may be depleted. Contact any authorized Lexus retailer or
Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

●

If the red indicator light blinks for approximately 30 seconds during an Emer-
gency Call, the call has been disconnected or the cellular network signal is
weak.

The backup battery has lifespan of at least 3 years.

Device test mode

A test mode is provided for to check the performance of the Emergency Call sys-
tem. To test the device, contact any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.

When the Emergency Call may not be made

●

It may not be possible to make Emergency Calls in any of the following situations. In
such cases, report to emergency services provider (112 system etc.) by other means
such as nearby public phones.

•

Even when the vehicle is in the cellular phone service area, it may be difficult to
connect to the ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center if the reception is poor or
the line is busy. In such cases, even though the system attempts to connect to
the ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center, you may not be able to connect to
the ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center to make Emergency Calls and contact
emergency services.

•

When the vehicle is out of the cellular phone service area, the Emergency Calls
cannot be made.

•

When any related equipment (such as the [SOS] button panel, indicator lights,
microphone, speaker, DCM, antenna, or any wires connecting the equipment) is
malfunctioning, damaged or broken, the Emergency Call cannot be made.

•

During an Emergency Call, the system makes repeated attempts to connect to
the ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center. However, if it cannot connect to the
ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center due to poor radio wave reception, the
system may not be able to connect to the cellular network and the call may finish
without connecting. The red indicator light will blink for approximately 30 seconds
to indicate this disconnection.

•

This device may not function if a shock is applied to it.

●

If the battery’s voltage decreases or there is a disconnection, the system may not be
able to connect to the ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center.

■

When the Emergency Call system is replaced with a new one

The Emergency Call system should be registered. Contact any authorized Lexus retailer
or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

■

For your safety

●

Please drive safely. The function of this system is to assist you in making the Emergency
Call in case of accidents such as traffic accidents or sudden medical emergencies, and
it does not protect the driver or passengers in any way. Please drive safely and fasten
your seatbelts at all times for your safety.

●

In case of an emergency, make lives the top priority.

●

If you smell anything burning or other unusual smells, leave the vehicle and evacuate to
a safe area immediately.

Since the system detects shocks, the automatic reporting may not always occur
synchronized with the operation of the airbag system. (If the vehicle is struck from
behind, etc.)

●

For safety, do not make the Emergency Call while driving. Making calls during
driving may cause mishandling of the steering wheel, which may lead to unexpected
accidents. Stop the vehicle and confirm the safety of your surroundings before making
the Emergency Call.

●

When changing fuses, please use the specified fuses. Using other fuses may cause
ignition or smoke in the circuit and lead to a fire.

●

Using the system while there is smoke or an unusual smell may cause a fire. Stop using
the system immediately and consult any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.

NOTICE

■

To prevent damage

Do not pour any liquids onto the [SOS] button panel, etc. and do not impact it.

■

If the [SOS] button panel, speaker or microphone malfunctions during an Emer-
gency Call or manual maintenance check

It may not be possible to make Emergency Calls, confirm the system status, or commu-
nicate with the ERA-GLONASS/EVAK control center operator. If any of the above
equipment is damaged, please consult any authorized Lexus retailer, Lexus authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.

Exterior maintenance and care

Washing the vehicle

WARNING

●

When washing the vehicle, do not apply water to the inside of the engine compart-
ment.
If water contacts electrical components, it may cause the vehicle to catch fire.

●

Exhaust gasses cause the exhaust pipes to become quite hot.

NOTICE

■

To prevent paint deterioration and corrosion of the body and components (wheels,
etc.)

●

Wash the vehicle immediately in the following cases:

•

After driving near the sea coast

•

After driving on salted roads

•

If coal tar or tree sap is present on the paint surface

•

If dead insects, insect droppings or bird droppings are present on the paint surface

•

After driving in an area contaminated with soot, oily smoke, mine dust, iron powder
or chemical substances

•

If the vehicle becomes heavily soiled with dust or mud

•

If liquids such as benzine or gasoline are spilled on the paint surface

●

If the paint is chipped or scratched, have it repaired immediately.

●

To prevent the wheels from corroding, remove any dirt and store in a place with low
humidity when storing the wheels.

■

To prevent damage to the windshield wiper arms

When lifting the wiper arms away from the windshield, pull the driver side wiper arm
upward first, and repeat for the passenger side. When returning the wipers to their
original position, do so from the passenger side first.

Perform cleaning in a manner appropriate to each component and its material.

●

Working from top to bottom, liberally apply water to the vehicle body, wheel
wells and underside of the vehicle to remove any dirt and dust.

●

Wash the vehicle body using a sponge or soft cloth, such as a chamois.

●

For hard-to-remove marks, use car wash soap and rinse thoroughly with water.

●

Wipe away any water.

INFORMATION

■

Self-restoring coat

The vehicle body has a self-restoring coating that is resistant to small surface scratches
caused by a car wash, etc.

●

The coating lasts for 5 to 8 years from when the vehicle is delivered from the plant.

●

The restoration time differs depending on the depth of the scratch and outside
temperature.
The restoration time may become shorter when the coating is warmed by applying
warm water.

●

Deep scratches caused by keys, coins, etc., cannot be restored.

●

Do not use waxes that contain abrasives.

■

When using a car wash (vehicles with a smart entry & start system)

If the door handle becomes wet while the electronic key is within the effective range,
the door may lock and unlock repeatedly. In that case, follow the following correction
procedures to wash the vehicle:

●

Place the key in a position 2 m (6 ft.) or more separate from the vehicle while the
vehicle is being washed.
Take care to ensure that the key is not stolen.

●

Set the electronic key to battery-saving mode to disable the smart entry & start
system.

■

Brake pads and calipers

Rust may form if the vehicle is parked with wet brake pads or disc rotors, causing them
to stick. Before parking the vehicle after it is washed, drive slowly and apply the brakes
several times to dry the parts.

Using an automatic car wash

NOTICE

When using an automatic car wash, move the wiper lever to the off position.
If the wiper lever is in the AUTO position, the wipers may operate unintentionally and the
wiper blades may be damaged.

●

Perform the following before washing your vehicle:

•

Fold the mirrors.

•

Vehicles with power back door:
Turn off the power back door.

Start washing from the front of the vehicle.
Extend the mirrors before driving.

●

Brushes used in automatic car washes may scratch the vehicle surface, parts
(wheel, etc.) and harm your vehicle’s paint.

●

Depending on the automatic car wash, the rear spoiler may become caught,
preventing it from being washed or causing damage to it.

●

When it is necessary to set the engine switch to ACC with the shift position held
in N, refer to

P.146

Using a high pressure washer to wash the vehicle

NOTICE

●

When washing the vehicle, do not spray any of the cameras or their surrounding area
directly. The shock from high pressure water may cause a camera to malfunction.

●

Do not bring the tip of the nozzle close to connectors or the boots (rubber or resin
cover) of the following parts.
The parts may be damaged if sprayed by high-pressure water.

Drivetrain related parts

Steering parts

•

Suspension parts

•

Brake parts

●

Keep the tip of the nozzle at least 30 cm (11.9 in.) away from the vehicle body.
Otherwise resin parts, such as the moldings, bumpers, etc., may be deformed and
damaged. Also, do not continuously spray water on the same place.

●

Do not spray the lower part of the windshield continuously. If water enters the air
conditioning system intake located near the lower part of the windshield, the air
conditioning system may not operate correctly.

●

Do not wash the underside of the vehicle using a high pressure washer.

When using a high pressure washer, as water may enter the cabin, do not bring the

rear window defogger heater wires or antenna. Use a cloth dampened with lukewarm
water to gently wipe the window clean. Wipe the window in strokes running parallel to
the heater wires or antenna.
