Конкурс письменной речи

В комплект материалов, необходимых для проведения конкурса

письменной речи, входят:

1. Методические рекомендации (по 1 экземпляру для каждого члена жюри)

2. Описание процедуры проведения конкурса письменной речи (см. Требования)

3. Задание (по 1 экземпляру на каждого участника и члена жюри)

4. Лист ответа для каждого участника (возможна выдача дополнительного листа ответа

по просьбе участника)

4. Протоколы конкурса письменной речи (по 1 экземпляру на каждого члена жюри,

возможна выдача дополнительных протоколов при большом количестве

проверенных работ на одного члена жюри)

5. Критерии оценивания конкурса письменной речи для жюри и Дополнительная схема

оценивания (по 1 экземпляру каждого документа на каждого члена жюри, возможна

выдача дополнительных экземпляров Дополнительной схемы оценивания при

большом количестве проверенных работ на одного члена жюри)

Участникам конкурса предлагается написать рассказ по заданным параметрам.

Коммуникативная задача считается полностью выполненной если:

1) Написан рассказ на заданную тему (по фотографии, с использованием первой фразы).

2) Все дополнительные аспекты содержания (4 дополнительных аспекта) раскрыты

полностью.

3) Текст написан своими словами, текстовые совпадения с источниками менее 30%.

По сложности задания соответствуют уровню С1 по шкале Совета Европы.

Объем работы либо должен соответствовать заданному 200 - 250 слов, либо

отклоняться от заданного не более чем на 10% в сторону увеличения или

уменьшения (от 180 до 275 слов).

На выполнение задания отводится 1 час 15 минут.

Участники могут использовать черновик. По окончании конкурса письменной речи черновики

собираются, но не проверяются. Проверке подлежит только лист ответа. Внимание! В

аудитории должны быть дополнительные листы ответов, которые могут

быть выданы участникам по их просьбе (если не хватило места для ответа

на одном листе ответа)!

УКАЗАНИЯ ПО ОЦЕНИВАНИЮ

Проверка письменных работ включает следующие этапы:

фронтальная проверка одной (случайно выбранной и отксерокопированной для

всех членов жюри) работы;

обсуждение выставленных оценок с целью выработки сбалансированной модели

проверки;

индивидуальная проверка работ: каждая работа проверяется в обязательном

порядке двумя членами жюри независимо друг от друга (каждый член жюри получает

чистую копию работы без каких-либо пометок). При расхождении в 1 балл (19 и 18,

например) в итоговую ведомость заносится больший балл (19). При расхождении в 2 балла

(19 и 17) в итоговой ведомости выставляется средний балл (18).

В сложных случаях (при расхождении оценок членов жюри в 3 балла) письменная работа

перепроверяется третьим членом жюри из числа наиболее опытных экспертов.

Рекомендуется назначать третьих экспертов из числа старших экспертов ЕГЭ по английскому

языку. Оценка третьего эксперта является окончательной и заносится в итоговую ведомость

(при условии, что оценка третьего эксперта отличается от оценки предыдущих экспертов не

более, чем на три балла).

При расхождении оценок двух членов жюри в четыре и более баллов или при расхождении

оценки третьего эксперта с оценками предыдущих экспертов в четыре и более баллов работа

проверяется комиссией. Комиссия формируется председателем жюри. В комиссию должны

войти председатель жюри и все эксперты, принимавшие участие в проверке данной работы.

Решение об итоговой оценке работы принимает председатель жюри.

Примечания к Критериям оценивания и Дополнительной схеме оценивания

1. Если в выполненном задании менее 180 слов, то задание проверке не подлежит и

оценивается в 0 баллов. При превышении объема более, чем на 10% (более 275 слов),

проверяются только первые 250 слов. Заголовок (даже если есть) не учитывается при

подсчете слов. Количество слов в первой фразе (данной в задании) учитывается при

подсчете слов.

2. Критерий «Решение коммуникативной задачиª оценивается в 0 баллов, если:

 не выполнена коммуникативная задача (написанный текст не является рассказом,

И/ИЛИ написанный рассказ не связан с фотографией, И/ИЛИ в рассказе не

использована первая фраза, данная в задании);

И/ИЛИ

 отсутствуют/ не раскрыты 4 дополнительных аспекта данного критерия

И/ИЛИ

 объем письменного текста менее 180 слов;

И/ИЛИ

 Более 30% ответа имеет непродуктивный характер.

При получении участником 0 баллов по критерию «Решение коммуникативной задачиª все

задание оценивается в 0 баллов.

3. Неправильное употребление слов, указанных в задании, оценивается только по

критерию «Решение коммуникативной задачиª.

4. При определении типа ошибки (лексическая, грамматическая, орфографическая)

следует руководствоваться следующими указаниями:

Лексическими ошибками считаются

• ошибки в неправильном употреблении слова в контексте;

• ошибки в словосочетании;

• пропуск слова, когда это не влияет на грамматическую структуру

предложения;

• ошибки в словообразовании (если не меняется часть речи: regular- unregular);

• послелоги во фразовых глаголах;

• ошибки в написании слов, которые меняют значение слова (think-thing, lose-

loose).

Грамматическими ошибками считаются

• ошибки в употреблении артиклей, предлогов, видовременных форм глаголов,

неличных форм глаголов, степеней сравнения прилагательных и наречий,

местоимений, ошибки в порядке слов в предложении и т.д.

• пропуск слова, влияющего на грамматическую структуру предложения

(пропуск подлежащего или сказуемого).

• ошибки в словообразовании, если меняется часть речи

(contribute

contribution).

• Употребление its вместо it’s или наоборот.

Орфографическими ошибками считаются

 ошибки в написании слов, которые не приводят к образованию нового слова

(different - differen).

 если один раз слово написано правильно, а другой раз неправильно -

неправильное написание считать орфографической ошибкой

5. Однотипные ошибки считаются один раз.

6. При подсчете пунктуационных ошибок учитываются только следующие ошибки:

1) отсутствие точки или восклицательного знака в конце предложения;

2) отсутствие вопросительного знака в конце вопроса;

3) отсутствие запятой при перечислении или в сложносочиненном

предложении;

4) отсутствие запятой при вводных словах;

5) отсутствие (или ошибка в употреблении) необходимых знаков препинания

при прямой речи или цитировании.

7. Ошибки в словах-связках (to my opinion - вместо in my opinion) учитываются по

критерию «Организация текстаª.

8. Ошибки в местоимениях считаются логическими или грамматическими в зависимости

от контекста: (I like good clothes. It also should be beautiful. - грамматическая ошибка; People

use computers. I do not love him. - логическая ошибка).

9. Критерии оценивания не предполагают оценивание аспектов в 0,5 балла. Следовательно,

итоговый балл за конкурс Writing может быть только целым числом (например, 16). БАЛЛ,

ЯВЛЯЮЩИЙСЯ НЕЦЕЛЫМ ЧИСЛОМ (НАПРИМЕР, 16,5) ПРИ СОБЛЮДЕНИИ

ПРОЦЕДУРЫ ОЦЕНИВАНИЯ НЕВОЗМОЖЕН.

Работы проверяются по Критериям оценивания

(необходимо использовать Критерии

оценивания и Дополнительную схему оценивания). Максимальное количество баллов за

задание Writing - 20.

Read the text below, then listen to part of a lecture on the same topic. You will notice

that some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer questions 16-25 by

choosing A if the idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can be found only in the

reading text, C if it can be found only in the audio-recording, and D if neither of

the materials expresses the idea.

Formation of stars and planets

A nebula is an interstellar cloud consisting of dust, hydrogen, helium and other

ionized gases. Originally, nebula was a name for any diffuse astronomical object

including galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Some nebulae can be viewed with the naked

eye due to fluorescent effect caused by the embedded hot stars, while others are so

diffuse that they can only be detected with the help of powerful telescopes as they are

extended and contain no well-defined boundaries.

All nebulae in the Milky Way Galaxy are forms of interstellar matter - namely,

the gas between the stars that is almost always accompanied by solid grains of cosmic

dust. Their appearance differs widely, depending not only on the temperature and

density of the material observed but also on how the material is spatially situated with

respect to the observer. Their chemical composition, however, is fairly uniform and

corresponds to the composition of the universe in general.

According to our current understanding, a star and its planets form out of

collapsing cloud of dust and gas, i.e. nebulae are often star-forming regions. In these

regions the formations of gas, dust, and other materials stick together to form denser

regions, which attract further matter, and eventually will become dense enough to form

stars. The remaining material is believed to form planets.

The birthplace of planets is the so-called proto-planetary disk. As the proto-

planetary disk spins, the material contained within it travels around the new star in the

same direction forming various celestial objects. Many of the celestial objects

eventually become planets, and as they form, they "sweep up" other material that

surrounds them. However, to be classified as a planet, an object must orbit a star, have

sufficient mass in order to acquire a nearly round shape, and have enough gravitational

power to attract smaller objects.

Now listen to part of a lecture on the same topic and then do the tasks (questions

The Design of Living Spaces

A Home. It is where we cook our meals, invite our friends to visit, and go to sleep.

It is also a place that can reflect our personality. The process of buying or renting a

house or room and giving it colour, furniture, and style is called interior design. Think

about where you live. What would a stranger know about you if he or she walked into

your home or room? White walls, wooden floors, and a few pieces of modern furniture

suggest that you are a calm and organized person. Colourful walls, books and pictures,

and lots of furniture suggest you are a more energetic and active person. How you

choose to design your home or room says something to the world about who you are.

It tells the world about your interests and about your personal identity.

B One important aspect of interior design is balance. This means there is a good

combination of colours and furniture so that a room feels comfortable. How do people

achieve balance in their homes? Some people use feng shui to help them with this

aspect of design. Feng shui is an Eastern philosophy. It teaches that all parts of people's

lives should balance two kinds of energy - yin and yang. Yin is the quiet, passive

energy, whereas yang is the strong and active energy. According to this philosophy, a

living space with a good balance of these two types of energy brings good luck, health,

and happiness.

C Feng shui provides guidelines about how to decorate a room. In a bedroom, for

example, the head of the bed should point in the correct direction. It should point north

for an older married couple. North is a quiet, peaceful direction. For a young adult,

however, feng shui says the head of the bed should point south. This direction has more

energy and passion. The head of the bed must not point northeast because this direction

causes nightmares. Also, a bedroom should not have any mirrors in it because mirrors

make it difficult to remove negative energy.

D Colour is another important aspect of interior design. Different colours have

different emotional and physical effects on people. For example, people usually feel

that red is the most exciting and stimulating colour. For this reason, it is not good for a

bedroom. Many people say they have nightmares if they sleep in a red room. In

contrast, green is a more peaceful colour. In some cultures green means health and

good luck, so it is a popular colour. Blue is also a good colour in most cultures. It

represents peace and stability. According to some studies, it is a masculine colour; men

often choose it for their living spaces. White, however, is used more than any other

colour in interior design. White is the combination of all colours, so it is a colour of

balance. It is often used in small rooms because it reflects light and therefore makes a

small room look bigger. In addition, it does not conflict with other colours in the room.

E Small homes and rooms create special challenges for architects and interior

designers. Some architects and designers are specialists in small living spaces. They

try to make them both functional and attractive. In Japan, these small living spaces are

called kyosho jutaku. For example, windows appear anywhere across a wall or in the

ceiling, to allow as much light as possible into narrow spaces. Furniture folds into the

wall, which allows one room to be used in many different ways. A bed may have a

desk, chair, and dresser underneath it. Traditional designers think of horizontal, or floor

space. In contrast, designers of small living spaces say that they try to use three-

dimensional space. For example, they may put storage space, such as closets or

bookshelves, high on walls, above other furniture.

You have decided to enter a short story competition in an English-language

magazine. The competition rules say that your story should be written in full

accordance with the following review:

It is an exciting story from the life of a young boy, who, all of a sudden, found an old

photo, which changed his life. The author describes the event in detail. He remembers

the day when it all happened. The story starts with a trivial phrase: “I usually go to

school through the park…” The phrase promises nothing but a dull narration about the

everyday life of a schoolboy. Do not be misled. Actually, it is only the first half of a

longer sentence. The quiet beginning quickly develops into a dramatic investigation.

The author rolls up his sleeves and sets out on an amazing race after the person in the

photo. Why does he feel that he has to find this person? Read the story! You will get

the answer.

The story is short and full of direct speech, which makes it more dynamic. Although it

looks like a detective story at first sight, it turns out to be a story about different

generations. As for the title of the story, it should be taken as a piece of irony, since in

the case of the author a bit of luck went together with a lot of effort.

На подготовку ответа участнику дается 15 минут. Во время подготовки ответа

участник получает текст задания и факт-файл с информацией в таблицах на

английском языке.

Через 15 минут начинается ответ пары участников.

1. В конкурсе устной речи участвуют 2 члена жюри.

2. Все инструкции участникам конкурса устной речи даются на английском языке.

3. Члены жюри приглашают к своему столу пару участников.

Пары составляются методом случайной подборки.

I Разминка

Каждому участнику задается 1 - 2 вопроса для того, чтобы снять напряжение, расположить их к

беседе и подготовить к выполнению устного задания олимпиады.

Время, отводимое на данный этап задания

1 - 2 минуты.

Разрешены вопросы типа:

 How often do you travel?

 What famous places of Russia have you visited?

 Where is it possible to watch wildlife?

Внимание! Не допускаются вопросы, которые направлены на выяснение фамилии

участника, номера школы, в которой учится участник, региона проживания и т.д.

II ОСНОВНОЕ ЗАДАНИЕ

Основное задание для каждого участника состоит из двух частей:

Часть 1. Участник 1 делает выступление по теме “Russian Nature Reserves” на заседании

английского клуба своей школы. Время выступления: 2 - 3 минуты. При этом перед участником

конкурса ставится задача обязательно прокомментировать в своем выступлении все указанные 4

аспектa, предлагаемые в карточке для участника, при использовании информации, представленной

в таблицах факт-файла на английском языке.

Часть

2. Вопросы

- ответы. После прослушанной презентации, сделанной участником

Участник у задает 2 вопроса своему партнеру. При этом запрашиваемая информация в вопросах к

выступавшему должна носить уточняющий характер и не повторять той, которая прозвучала в

презентации. Время вопросов/ ответов: 2 - 3 минуты.

Затем участники меняются ролями. Общее время ответа пары: 12 - 15 минут.

До перерыва:

Если есть необходимость простимулировать ответ или выступление, члены жюри могут

дополнительно задать любому участнику вопросы по ходу его ответа.

В том случае, если один из партнеров не дает высказываться своему собеседнику и вместо вопроса

начинает высказывать свою точку зрения, т.е. вместо вопросов звучат утверждения, члены жюри

обязаны вмешаться и предложить выступающему быть внимательным относительно условия

задания.

Выступления участников записываются на электронный носитель. Запись включается в момент

начала ответа на задание 1. Перед началом и по окончании ответа члены жюри записывают

идентификационные номера участников прошедшей пары: «Это были номер ХХХХХХ и номер

ХХХХХХ.ª

Если остается трое участников, следует предложить одному из 3-х оставшихся участников

дважды выполнить две разные роли в образовывающихся таким образом разных парах: А + В и А

+ С. Ответ этого участника оценивается только один раз в первой паре. Также возможно

предложить одному остающемуся участнику вести беседу с членом жюри. Решение принимает

председатель жюри.

Ответы участников оцениваются по Критериям оценивания. К Критериям оценивания

прилагается Дополнительная схема оценивания. Баллы участников заносятся в Протокол.

Методические рекомендации

Конкурс устной речи

В комплект материалов, необходимых для проведения конкурса устной речи, входят:

1. Методические рекомендации (для членов жюри).

2. Описание процедуры проведения конкурса устной речи (для членов жюри - см.

Требования).

3. Четыре набора в комплекте (для участников)

Важно: Для каждого участника свой набор (карточка участника + соответствующий

факт-файл).

4. Жюри получает комплекты с факт-файлами и карточки участника. Карточки с

заданиями для членов жюри не отличаются от карточек участников конкурса. Но:

члены жюри ТАКЖЕ получают карточку члена жюри.

5. Критерии оценивания (для каждого члена жюри в аудитории)

6. Дополнительная схема оценивания конкурса устной речи (для каждого члена жюри

в аудитории).

7. Протокол устного ответа (1 экземпляр на 2х членов жюри в аудитории).

В конкурсе устной речи участвуют 2 члена жюри и 2 участника олимпиады.

Все инструкции участникам конкурса устной речи даются на английском языке.

Члены жюри приглашают к своему столу пару участников. Пары составляются

методом случайной подборки. (Подробнее см. Требования)

Время ответа пары участников:

1. Подготовка ответа - 15 минут.

2. Разминка - 2 - 3 минуты.

3. Мини-презентация по выбранному объекту участника №1: 2 - 3 минуты на основании

информации из факт файла.

4. Вопросы по мини-презентации участника №1: 2 - 3 минуты.

5. Мини-презентация участника №2: 2 - 3 минуты на основании информации из факт файла.

6. Вопросы по мини-презентации участника №2: 2 - 3 минуты.

Максимально отводимое время на пару участников для выступления составляет 15

минут; время, отводимое на подготовку задания - 15 минут.

Методическая комиссия подготовила два равноценных варианта заданий (Set 1/3 и Set 2/4).

Организаторы заключительного тура должны использовать два комплекта (Set 1 и Set 2 до

перерыва; а после перерыва Set 3 и Set 4) для всех пар участников.

При подготовке материалов для конкурса устной речи методическая комиссия исходила из

следующих положений:

 По сложности задания соответствуют уровню В2-С1 по шкале Совета Европы.

 Предполагается, что на этом уровне владения языком участник олимпиады должен

уметь продуцировать как монологическую, так и диалогическую речь.

Оценка за конкурс устной речи выставляется по Критериям оценивания

(необходимо использовать Критерии оценивания и Дополнительную схему

оценивания).

Максимальное количество баллов - 20.

УКАЗАНИЯ ПО ОЦЕНИВАНИЮ

Процедура оценивания устной речи включает следующие этапы:

запись всех этапов устного ответа на диктофон (или электронный носитель);

заполнение общего протокола двумя членами жюри в аудитории;

Устное выступление оценивается двумя членами жюри

(используются Критерии

оценивания и Дополнительная схема оценивания), которые заносят баллы каждого

участника пары в протокол (общий для двух членов жюри в аудитории) после обсуждения;

в случае значительного расхождения мнений членов жюри принимается решение о

прослушивании сделанной записи устного ответа всем составом жюри и оценка обсуждается

всеми членами жюри. При этом окончательное решение об оценке ответа принимает

председатель жюри.

Примечания к Критериям оценивания и Дополнительной схеме

оценивания

1. При оценивании выступления участника по критерию «Решение коммуникативной

задачиª следует обратить внимание на аспекты 2 (участник говорит о местоположении и

территории заповедника) и 3 (участник говорит о флоре и фауне на территории

заповедника). Каждый из этих аспектов состоит из двух частей. Если раскрыты обе части

аспекта, аспект считается раскрытым и оценивается в 1 балл. Если раскрыта только одна

часть аспекта, аспект также считается раскрытым и оценивается в 1 балл. Если не раскрыты

обе части аспекта, аспект считается нераскрытым и оценивается в 0 баллов.

2. При оценивании аспекта 6 критерия «Решение коммуникативной задачиª (участник

говорит свободно, а не читает свое выступление по своим записям) 0 баллов за аспект

ставится, если участник читает свое выступление по записям. Если участник время от

времени смотрит в свои записи, аспект оценивается в 1 балл.

3. Выступление участника по критерию «Организация речиª оценивается по трем аспектам.

Каждый аспект оценивается в 1 балл, если не допущено ни одной ошибки по данному

Read the passage below and answer questions 1-15.

WERE DINOSAURS A FAILURE?

There is a strong tendency among many people to think of the dinosaur as a failure.

It’s true, of course, that the species did die out. And, in relation to the long existence

of the earth, the disappearance of the dinosaur was a rather sudden one. No one is

quite sure why they disappeared; and since they haven’t been around for some 75

million years, it’s a little difficult to come up with an explanation that is any more

than partially acceptable. One of the most commonly-held theories is that the dinosaur

couldn’t adapt. The question very few seem to ask, however, is, “Couldn’t adapt to

what?”

The dinosaur was the dominant earth species for over one hundred million years.

Surely within any period of such great length there had to be considerable adaptation.

One of the yardsticks we can use as a basis for judgment is to examine the number of

dinosaur extremes. How many orders and sub-orders were there within the dinosaur

species? Without going into statistics, I can assure you that there were plenty. They

ran from the chicken-sized Compsognathus on up to the more familiar - and much

bigger - Brontosaurus.

Now let’s apply this same yardstick to man. In the one million years or so that we’ve

been around, only four racial extremes have finally evolved; and I think you’ll agree

that they can hardly be considered 'extremes'. When it comes to pure biological

differences, the distinctions among the Australoid, Mongoloid, Caucasoid and

Negroid races are rather superficial. On the basis of the number of extremes, it

appears that man, not the dinosaur, has shown the least variety in adapting.

As a matter of fact, man is not nearly the perfect creature he likes to imagine he is.

Evolution, in fact, has played a couple of nasty tricks on us. To begin with, it has left

us with an appendix that in other animals serves a definite digestive purpose but

which, in man, seems to do nothing other than catch a stray orange pit or something,

become inflamed, and need surgical removal.

Our sinuses serve the important function of eliminating unnecessary bone structure

and thereby making one’s head light enough so that it can be easily supported by the

rest of the body. In man, however, the sinuses frequently become infected due to

improper drainage, thus causing annoying medical problems. Some specialists point

out that if man did not insist upon walking only on his hind legs instead of on all four

like other animals, his sinuses would drain properly because that is the way they are

built to drain.

And finally we come to the great affliction of mankind, the common aching back.

Man is born with a straight, unstressed (that is, not under pressure) spine; and if he

never learned to walk upright, his spine would remain that way and he probably

wouldn’t have any backaches. But once man does begin to walk, his spine, in order to

permit the upright position, becomes stressed with an inward curve. Sometimes the

stresses prove too great, and injuries are the result.

Of course, as a species, man is still undergoing a variety of evolutionary changes. We

are becoming taller, growing less hair and fewer teeth, and developing larger skulls,

and we may eventually lose one or more toes and an equal number of fingers. In fact,

we are becoming more and more specialized and, if anything, less able to adapt. If

these trends continue, the people of the future will be a most unattractive group, at

least by today’s standards. However, attractiveness isn’t particularly important to

racial success or failure. As unpleasant as the Tyranosaurus might have looked to us,

or we to him, he probably looked fine to another Tyranosaurus.

What is most important, though, is this inability of ours to adapt from within. A while

ago, a 'scientific theory' which was really a joke, claimed that man had come from

some place other than earth and had arrived here fairly well along in his development.

It was, of course, nonsense and never meant to be otherwise, but some of the 'proofs'

were rather interesting. To state them briefly: (1) man can’t breathe under water, so

he can’t survive without artificial aid on most of the earth’s surface; (2) extreme

exposure to this atmosphere’s natural radiation (sunlight) will kill him; (3) without

protection man cannot survive the earth’s normal temperature changes; and (4)

normal earth gravity severely limits his activities. Hence, the 'theory' claimed, man

couldn’t possibly have developed in a place so naturally unsuited to the way he is

made. If you stop to think about it, you’ll see that all of these environmental

limitations - and more - do really exist, and that man cannot survive outside rather

narrow environmental limits.

It’s this inability to adapt that may provide the causes for our own racial extinction. If

we cannot adapt enough to fit our environment, then we must, as we are doing, keep

changing our environment to make it fit us; and it is that changing that is creating

serious problems.

For example, it’s all very good to develop a light, portable cave called a tent; but

tents have a way of becoming less portable and turning into more permanent

structures called houses. And not being content to let well enough alone, we must

then begin to control the climate in these houses. So far so good, but when you

extend this idea of changing and controlling nature to include your total environment

- and we are headed in this direction

- how many delicate balances are you

disturbing? And, more important, what will be the long-range effect of these

disturbances? We’re all aware, I think, of the terrible dangers in the polluting of air

and water. But aren’t we also taking a great risk when we set out to destroy a

particular species of annoying insect or to bring in an animal new to the area in order

to destroy another species of animal? Perhaps, thus far, we’ve been fortunate and

haven’t quite completed the destruction of our own ecology, but each time we upset

the balance, no matter in how small a way, we increase the risk. And sooner or later

we are going to make that one all-important mistake.

Incidentally, it may well be that we’ve made the mistake already. We are now

discovering that our survival may well depend upon the solution of several problems

all related to the same question: Will man kill himself through overpopulation? We

have more people being born, more babies and children staying alive and growing up

(because of better feeding and medical care), more adults living longer than ever

before. We have reduced the death rate tremendously - but not the birth rate.

At the present rate of population growth, scientists tell us, the earth (which already

has millions of people living in crowded conditions that most Americans can’t begin

to imagine and which already has millions of people starving to death) will eventually

not have enough living space or food for anyone.

To get back to my original question, “Were Dinosaurs a Failure?”, considering the

fact that they were around for something over a hundred million years and we’ve

been here for only slightly more than one million, I think that any answer is at least

99 million years too early. In the long run, it may be that the dinosaur, compared with

man, was a great, glowing success.

For hundreds of years the movement of people through the discovery of new

The Moors imported Asiatic rice to the Iberian peninsula in the 10^th century

and it was introduced into the Italian diet through trading in the 15^th century. Rice

cultivation was then introduced into North America by the European settlers. In the

16^th century the Portuguese and Dutch started transporting tea from Asia to Europe

and in 1650 tea arrived in America. Today the four staple foods found throughout the

world are wheat, rice, maize and potatoes.

Furthermore, in the last few decades with even more immigration taking place,

increased international travel and better communications between countries, the

traditional foods, dishes and recipes of one country have influenced or even been

assimilated by another. For example, in Britain people quite often eat Italian pasta,

Spanish paella, Indian curry or Japanese sushi as part of their everyday diet. In many

European countries when dining out in restaurants nowadays, people can taste and

experience dishes from vast array of different countries such as China, Japan,

Ethiopia, Mexico and Brazil.
