The Matryoshka Doll's house
The Russian Matryoshka Museum is home to a collection of 400 Matryoshka
dolls. These date from the 19th century up to the present day. The dolls are wooden
with beautiful decorations. Some of them represent characters from Russian
literature, fairy tales and politics. Most of the dolls have five to seven pieces, but
some sets are really big and have fifty pieces. The biggest piece is one metre high and
the smallest one is one centimetre high.
The History of the Matryoshka Doll
The Matryoshka doll came to Russia from Japan at the end of the 19th century.
The first Matryoshka was a girl in a print dress, a white apron and a bright shawl,
carrying a rooster under her arm. There were six other dolls inside her. The doll
looked very Russian and soon became popular. The name Matryoshka came from the
common Russian name Matryona. Today, Matryoshkas are made in many parts of
Russia.

Reading
Time: 15 minutes (10 points)
Task 1
Read the text 'School in the Past and in the Future'. Then match the beginnings
of the sentences (1-10) from the text with their endings (a-l). There are two
extra endings.
School in the Past and in the Future
In Britain in the early and mid-nineteenth century, children didn't have to go to
school at all. There were schools, of course, but you had to pay to go to them, and
often parents couldn't afford the fees. Many people also believed that girls didn't need
to go to school, as their future was to get married and have children. Although from
1870 the law said that all children aged 5 to 10 had to go to school, many poor
families weren't able to pay. The children of these families needed to have a job in
order to pay the fees, and school timetables were organised to make this possible. It
wasn't until 1918 that children had to be at least 12 years old to work for a living.
Schools 100 years ago were certainly very different from those today. But what
about the future? A national newspaper recently organised a competition for schools
called The school I'd like. 'I'm concerned that the pressures of the national curriculum
will mean that there won't be time for a project like this,' a reporter said. She needn't
have worried, as there were over 15,000 entries full of ideas!
And what great ideas: a school in a giant submarine with waterproof maps of
the underwater world, private helicopters to fly students to France for French lessons,
and rockets to take children to distant planets to study the solar system. There are also
some down-to-earth suggestions: clean toilets with locks that work so that students
won't have to wait until they get home, no uniforms so that students will be able to
choose what to wear, chill-out rooms to relax in, and enough computers so that
students won't need to queue for them. Safety and comfort are clearly important: one

The rise of Moscovy (as the principality was named) was made possible due to
several factors. First and foremost was its location in the area between the rivers at
the crossroads of Russia’s trade routes. Another factor was its prestige as a seat of the
Russian Orthodox Church, which became important after the fall of Constantinople in
the 15th century. Moreover, during the 1350s, the Mongol-Tatar Golden Horde was
weakened by numerous struggles for power within its vast empire. Meanwhile, the
Kremlin was being strengthened.
In 1380, Dmitry led the Russian army to confront the Horde near the River
Don. The battle of Kulikovo was the Russians’ first victory, and this historic event
was commemorated by the foundation of the Donskoy Monastery on the site where
Dmitry assumed the title of Donskoy. However, the Horde remained a serious threat.
In the years that followed, Russian icon painting reached its zenith. The names
of the artists were Theopohanes the Greek, Andrei Rublyev and Daniil Cherniy, who
worked in Moscow.
In 1453, the Byzantine capital Constantinople fell to the Turks.

The Tatar Yoke was finally thrown off in the reign of Ivan III, Dmitry
Donskoy’s grandson. He was known as Ivan the Great. He married Sophia
Palaiologina, the niece of the last Emperor of Byzantium. She presented the country
with its coat-of-arms - a double-headed eagle. Ivan III used it as a symbol of his
claim to rule the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. So, Ivan’s marriage provoked

the idea of Russia being one and only successor of the Great Constantinople and the
only true defender of the Orthodox Church.
Having gained power over Yaroslavl, Rostov, Tver and Pskov before his
marriage, Ivan III continued the expansion of Moscovy. By the end of his reign even
independent Novgorod had submitted, giving Moscow control of a huge area that
stretched as far north as the White Sea. Thus, he acquired the title of the “Gatherer of
the Russian lands” and “Autocrat of all the Russians”.

Read the passage below and answer questions 1-15.
ASSISTANTS TO THE STARS
It stands to reason that a city like Los Angeles, which is home to so many of
the famous and the semi-famous, would have an Association of Celebrity Personal
Assistants (ACPA). The organisation describes personal assistants as ‘multitasking’,
as ‘possessing the most resourceful, creative, insightful, and results-driven abilities.’
When I first got in touch with Josef Csongei, the organisation’s president, he
was initially reluctant to talk to me because I was a journalist. As he sees it, celebrity
personal assistants have not always been treated fairly by the press. But despite this,
and all the hard work and lack of appreciation that can come with this line of work,
he explained, the jobs were still widely sought after. He noted that people regularly
travelled great distances to attend a seminar titled ‘Becoming a Celebrity Personal
Assistant’, run by the ACPA. To prove his point, he told me about Dean Johnson. In
the coming weeks, I heard this story from a number of assistants, including Johnson
himself, and every time it left me baffled.
The story begins one night in September 1994, with Dean Johnson sitting at
home in Columbia, South Carolina. Johnson is a single,
32-year-old business
executive in charge of marketing and advertising at a sizeable company in the
healthcare industry. It is 11 pm and he’s looking to unwind in front of the television
after a long day’s work. A repeat of a talk show appears on the screen, and the host
introduces her four guests: the celebrity personal assistants for Whoopi Goldberg,
Roseanne Barr, Burt Reynolds and Carol Burnett. As these assistants talk about
flying on private jets and attending Hollywood parties, Johnson reaches for a pen and
starts taking notes. Without wasting another minute, he picks up the phone, calls
2

Школьный этап. 9-11 классы
directory enquiries in Los Angeles, and asks for the home phone numbers of the four
assistants on the show.
Only one of them is listed: Ron Holder, who works for Whoopi Goldberg.
Johnson dials his number, and a minute later Holder picks up the phone. ‘He said I
was very lucky to get through,’ Johnson told me. ‘Apparently, in the three months
since he had appeared on that talk show, he had received about 200 phone calls from
people like me. He was in the process of disconnecting his phone, but he was nice
enough to chat with me for a while.’ During their conversation, Holder told Johnson
that he should consider attending the ‘Becoming a Celebrity Personal Assistant’
seminar in Los Angeles.
For someone like Johnson, with almost no connections in the industry, the
notion of moving out to Los Angeles to become a celebrity personal assistant,
something he did two months later, was extremely courageous - there’s no denying
that. The typical American story of the guy in the remote provinces who falls in love
with the glamour of the silver screen, packs up all his possessions and moves out to
Hollywood to become a star is almost a century old. But Johnson’s story offered a
new twist: he moved out to Hollywood to become an assistant to a star.
Of the thousands of people who work in Hollywood: agents, lawyers, stylists,
publicists, business managers and others, many hope to rub shoulders with the
biggest stars. What’s unique about celebrity personal assistants is that such proximity
appears to be the only perk their profession offers. Most describe the bulk of their
work as drudgery: doing laundry, fetching groceries, paying bills. Assistants typically
make about $56,000 a year - hardly a fortune by Hollywood standards, especially
given the round-the-clock obligations they often have. What’s more, the job is rarely
a stepping stone to fame: celebrity personal assistants are, on average, aged about 38,
right in the middle of their professional lives, and most of the ones I met described
their line of work as a lifelong profession. For them, being an assistant was not the
means to an end but an end in itself.

Listening comprehension
For items 1-10 listen to a man talking about the sport of elephant polo and decide
whether the statements 1-10 are TRUE according to the text you hear (A), or FALSE
(B), or the information on the statement is NOT STATED in the text (C). You will hear
the text twice. You have 20 seconds to look through the statements.
(pause 20 seconds)
Now we begin
Of course, polo is normally played on horses, and it’s a very fast game. Well, we don’t
claim that elephant polo is the fastest game in the world, but we always maintain it’s
the biggest. The elephants do actually enjoy polo. Definitely. It's a lot of fun for them
because they’re social animals, and a polo tournament is a week when dozens of
elephants meet up, many from the same family, like a reunion. And of course they get
fed extremely well - better than in their normal life. They use up a lot of energy and
get through masses of sugar cane, especially at half-time.
The players sit on elephants and hit a white wooden ball, using a long bamboo stick
that has a polo mallet head on the end of it. The pitch is about three-quarters the length
of a football pitch, and the goals are the same width as football goals. There’s a basic
saddle and the players are strapped onto the elephants.
We've never had a serious accident. A mahout - an elephant handler - sits behind each
player and guides the elephant. Sometimes the mahouts have their own games, guiding
the elephant and hitting the ball as well. That takes incredible skill.
During a game, if the ball hits an elephant, that’s fine. Their legs are quite thick and
they do get in the way. Quite often they will kick the ball so they can run after
it. They’re not allowed to pick up the ball with their trunks, though they sometimes try.
That would be a free hit to the other side.
There are four elephants per team in a tournament, plus the referee’s elephant - that’s
nine on the pitch at any one time. We usually have sixteen animals available on any
given day, in four teams. There are two halves, called chukkas, in a game of elephant
polo, the same as in normal polo. We play ten minutes of actual play. Whenever the
whistle blows, the clock stops. A novice team might score one or two goals, if they’re
lucky, while an advanced team might score about ten.
The polo rules are that a man can only hold the stick with his right arm, even if he is
left-handed. Women can use both hands. Using the stick is hard work, because it's long
and the head is heavy. By the end of the game, your arm will be aching. But it’s an
easy game to pick up with a little practice.

Школьный этап. 9-11 классы
During the game, you chase after the ball on your elephant, going quite quickly,
and you can easily miss it, though the elephant will often help you out with his foot.
The elephants usually supply the entertainment. They might decide to lie down across
the goal for fun but that’s an absolute no-no.
Ultimately it’s about elephants charging up and down the pitch, scoring great goals
themselves and having a lot of fun. If the elephants didn’t enjoy it, or if there was any
form of misbehaving, they would be removed from the game - sent off, if you like. It’s
not worth risking an elephant with an attitude problem.
You get all sorts. You get big elephants that are a bit older and wiser, and we use a lot
of small ones that can be exceptionally quick. We try to remove what you might call
the elephant factor by swapping elephants and mahouts with the other team at half-
time. If you’ve got elephants that don’t normally live together, there can be some
tension. The sport always uses Indian elephants. The problem with African ones is that
their ears get in the way. And they’re much taller.
You have 20 seconds to check your answers. (pause 20 seconds)
Now listen to the text again. (text repeated)
This is the end of the listening comprehension task.

Task 1
Read the text People Who Changed the World and complete the gaps (6-11) in
the text with six of the phrases (A-H). There are two extra phrases.
People Who Changed the World
The French chemist and biologist, Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) made one of the most
important discoveries in medical history. He discovered that there were germs called
bacteria in the air which caused liquids to sour, so he developed the process called
'pasteurisation': killing the bacteria ____6_____ . Because of Pasteur's research, most
dairy products today are pasteurised. Pasteur then realised that most infectious
diseases are caused by germs in the air, ____7_____ . He used this theory to explain
how vaccination worked and showed how doctors could prevent some illnesses by
injecting weak forms of the disease. Pasteur's pioneering work has protected millions
of people from disease, thanks to pasteurisation and vaccination.
The American writer and biologist Rachel Carson (1907-1964) started the modern
environmental movement when she wrote a controversial book about the destructive
effects of pesticides on the chain of life. Silent Spring, ____8____ , is one of the few
books that have changed the way people view the natural world. Its impact was so
enormous that it was compared with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. As a
result, Carson was attacked by the chemical industry, but Silent Spring also caused a
massive protest against environmental pollution. Consequently, the US government
started to take action to control the use of pesticides in agriculture _____9_____ .
And thanks to Rachel Carson, there is now a worldwide movement to protect the
environment.

The Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi
(1874-1937) made the first ever
transatlantic radio transmission on 12 December 1901. A transmitter in south-west
England signalled the letter S - three dots in Morse code - and the signal was picked
up in Newfoundland, 3,500km away. This achievement was so extraordinary that at
first people didn't believe it. Marconi had already successfully transmitted a message
over 50km _____10_____ . But most scientists believed that radio waves would not
follow the curve of the Earth and could, therefore, never transmit signals across an
ocean. It was such a long way that it seemed completely impossible. Marconi proved
them wrong. As a result of his achievement, we have seen the development of
broadcasting, communications satellites, radar, the telephone and the Internet.
Marconi's genius has also helped to save thousands of lives on land, _____11_____ -
when the Titanic sank in 1912, an estimated 700 lives were saved thanks to SOS
signals from a Marconi transmitter.

READING
Time: 45 minutes (20 points)
Task 1
For items 16-25, read the passage below and choose option A, B, C or D which best
fits according to the text.
(1) It’s Monday afternoon and Kate Turner is teaching a class of 11- and 12-
year-olds French. Last week they wrote a set of descriptive sentences about animals
and today they’re going to turn their descriptions into picture books.
(2) “Once you’ve finished with your sentences, you’re going to illustrate them
to reflect what you’ve written,” she tells the class.
Silence.
“Any questions?”
A hand pops up.
“Do we have to draw the pictures? Can’t we just write the sentences?”
“You need to draw the pictures as well. You’re making a picture book,
remember?”
“But I can’t draw, Miss.”
(3) A ripple of agreement spreads around the room. Heads shake. One boy goes
under his desk and refuses to come out for 10 minutes. Kate spends the lesson
encouraging and cajoling them to give it a try.
(4) The trouble is, they’re right. Most of them can’t draw. Their illustrations
wouldn’t look out of place in a reception classroom when kids are four or five and
just start school. Cats, cows, pigs and mice all appear the same - round heads and
bodies drawn with four stick legs poking out. And it isn’t just this particular class.
With few exceptions, the pattern is repeated in every year group that we all teach.
And this is already middle school.
(5) According to the primary national curriculum, we should be teaching
children to become “proficient in drawing”. But what’s going on in actuality? “There
just aren’t enough hours in the day,” says the school principal.
“And that’s the end of
that.”
(6) It’s not just art. Music is sidelined too, as are languages. Children are
removed from French lessons for extra reading and writing interventions; school
productions are shelved due to lack of practice time; opportunities for drama are
reduced to the odd English lesson.
-3-
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников по английскому языку. 2018-2019 уч. г.
Муниципальный этап. 9-11 классы
(7) And why is it all happening? Teachers are under pressure to improve
outcomes for reading, writing and maths, particularly in year groups where SATs
(standard assessment tests) are the only tool for assessing children.
(8) Most teachers find themselves in that position, being forced to make
changes to timetables they’d rather not. Every January they would sit down together
with their colleagues and take a red pen to the timetable they’d carefully crafted in
September, replacing music with extra comprehension or swapping French or any
other foreign language for additional spelling sessions.
(9) In a recent survey,
97% of the union’s teachers agreed that SATs
preparation did not support children’s access to a broad and balanced curriculum,
saying the time taken to prepare children for assessment in maths and English has
squeezed out other subjects and activities. The problem doesn’t stop when our
children leave primary. The proportion of 13 up to 15- and 16-year-olds taking
subjects like music and drama has fallen to its lowest level in 10 years. The study of
modern foreign languages at GCSE1 is also in decline.
(10) Most teachers feel strongly that our schools are missing a trick. Feversham
Primary Academy in Bradford recently made headlines for its focus on teaching the
arts, particularly music, drama and art into every part of the school day. Seven years
ago Feversham was in special measures and making headlines for all the wrong
reasons. Today it is rated “good” by Ofsted and is in the top 10% nationally for pupil
progress in reading, writing and maths, according to the most recent data.
(11) Improving outcomes aside, Kate Turner and lots of other teachers worry
about the message we’re sending our children when we push arts and languages into
the background. They say we’re creating a gulf between children whose parents can
afford to take them to private music lessons, language clubs or the theatre, and those
whose access comes mainly through the school curriculum.
(12) But more than all this, we should all remember an Einstein quote - the one
that says that if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will spend its life
thinking it is stupid. There are children who struggle to read but come to life on the
stage. There are those who just can’t concentrate at other lessons but will sit and paint
for an hour without leaving their seat. If our schools are only interested in children’s
progress and attainment in a limited range of subjects, how can we ever hope to build
on the potential of those whose strengths lie elsewhere?
1 The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is an academic qualification, generally taken in
a number of subjects by pupils in secondary education in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
-4-

Муниципальный этап. 9-11 классы
(13) The trouble is that creativity, increased confidence or a love of the arts
aren’t easily measured through standardized tests, data analysis or league tables.
Maybe that’s why, ultimately, certain subjects are sidelined. Perhaps this may sound
idealistic, but this is an issue that bothers teachers today. And it should bother school
leaderships and government too.
16. In Kate Turner's classroom the kids are tasked to
A) write sentences using words denoting animals.
B) create pictures to accompany their writings.
C) write sentences to illustrate the given pictures.
D) create a picture book for the whole class.

B) They eagerly agree to fulfill the task.
C) They encourage each other to do it.
D) They stay indifferent to the task.
18. The words “reception classroom” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A) the class Kate Turner is teaching.
B) the opening class of a new subject.
C) the first class in primary school.
D) the class that starts a new academic year.

A) Teaching basic skills is given priority over creative classes.
B) French classes need more hours to practice writing and reading.
C) Drama classes are taught in the English language only.
D) Language classes should be substituted by drama and music classes.
20. Which sentence is NOT TRUE about the way teachers deal with their timetables?
A) Teachers are not eager to change the timetables they made at the start of the
academic year.
B) Teachers integrate extra classes to prepare students for SATs into their
timetables.
C) Teachers have to adjust their timetables for students to achieve better scores
at exams.
D) Teachers have to substitute a number of classes in favour of SATs subjects.

A) leaves more time for family communication.
B) gives students more free time.
C) divides students into social strata.
D) provides students with more choice.

A) We can’t judge everyone on the same scale.
B) Children should try themselves in different fields.

B) Schools should have an individual approach to every student.
C) Art, music and drama should be optional subjects at school.
D) Standardized tests should not be used for assessing students' abilities and

The Moscow Metro
0
Moscow’s metro is arguably the most iconic and beautiful in the world.
00
It’s full of the frescoes and very punctual trains. It’s also a good place to
shelter from bad weather during a chilly city day.
36
People first started talking about a metro for Moscow in 1902 due to the need
not to lag behind London, which had built its underground system 39 years
before.
37
Moreover, the city became irrevocably mired in traffic jams, and Muscovites
were suffered.
38
Construction of the first tunnel began in 1931, and four years later, the first

proudly told the Rabochaya Moskva newspaper: “I’ve travelled in wagons,
street-cars, horse-drawn trams, and electric trams, and now I’ve lived to see
the metro.
